Samsung VRT HE top-load washers (2011-2016, incl. the 2016 top-detach recall): quick sheet

Covers: Samsung HE top-load washers of the 2011-2016 generation, including the VRT (Vibration Reduction Technology) models such as WA5471ABP/ABW, WA5451ANW, WA456DRHDWR/DSU, WA476/WA484 and the later WA45H/WA48H/WA48J/WA50F/WA52J/WA56H series. 34 of these models (by serial range) are in the CPSC recall 17-028 of November 4, 2016. Not the separate 2023 fire-hazard software recall (WA49B/WA50B/WA51A/WA52A/WA54A/WA55A).

Before any repair on one of these, check the recall. CPSC recall 17-028 covered about 2.8 million Samsung top-loaders sold March 2011 to November 2016 (CPSC said made March 2011 to April 2016): the top can detach from the cabinet during high-speed spin, especially with bedding, bulky or water-resistant items. CPSC listed 733 reports of excessive vibration or top detachment and nine injuries. The remedy was a free in-home reinforcement of the top with a one-year warranty extension, a rebate toward a new washer, or a refund for very recent purchases. Until reinforced, only the delicate or waterproof cycle was to be used for bulky loads. After that, the usual calls are unbalance (UE/dC), drain (nd/5C), no fill (4C) and lid codes.

Safety first

Do not run a recalled, unremedied unit on high-speed spin with bulky loads.
Unplug before opening the cabinet or touching the pump or valves.
Stand clear of the lid during high-speed spin tests.

How it works

VRT: Samsung says the spin pauses for a few moments at around 400 rpm and vibrates briefly; that pause is normal, not a fault.

Unbalanced load codes stop high-speed spin: UE (and on some models dC) means the load is unbalanced. Samsung warns dC means door/lid error on some models and unbalance on others, so check the user manual for the model.

nd / 5C / SC: no drain. 4C / nF: not filling. LE on some models: water leak or water-level sensor fault.

Model and serial are on two labels on the back of the cabinet; the serial decides whether a recalled model is included.

Samsung splits codes into information codes (a user or installation condition such as swapped hot and cold hoses or an unlatched door) and real error codes. The same fault may read differently by generation: older machines used E-numbers or 4E-style codes, newer ones 4C-style, some top-loaders nF. Wi-Fi models push codes to SmartThings when they happen; Smart Care is a separate camera-based check that only reads its own test, not real codes. Many models also keep a stored-code list in a service mode whose buttons vary by model.

All the major brands build in a cleaning cycle and remind the user about once a month or every 20-40 loads: Whirlpool about every 30 cycles, LG after about 30 cycles ('tcL'), Samsung after 40 washes on front-loaders and 20 on top-loaders. Whirlpool WTW6157P** (WTW6157PW white, WTW6157PB Volcano Black; first engineering revision WTW6157PW0 seen in parts listings). ENERGY STAR lists it as available on the market from May 2023 (the 'P' letter is the 2023 model-year code in Whirlpool numbering). 5.3 cu ft US (DOE) class, about 6.1 cu ft IEC in Canada. The smaller WTW5057L** also carries a 2-in-1 removable agitator but differs in capacity (about 4.7-4.8 cu ft) and listed spin (about 770 rpm), and our sources do not confirm the two share the same agitator parts, so it is NOT covered here.

Whirlpool WFW6720R** (5.0 cu ft US / 5.8 cu ft IEC; ENERGY STAR base model H24JAK50) and WFW5720R** (4.5 cu ft US / 5.2 cu ft IEC; base model H24JAL50). ENERGY STAR lists WFW5720R on the market from July 2024 and WFW6720R from August 2024 ('R' is the 2024 model-year letter).
