Samsung RF28R7201 / RF28R7351 4-Door Flex French-door refrigerator: quick sheet
Covers: Samsung 28 cu ft 36-inch 4-Door Flex bottom-freezer units built around RF28R7201** (ENERGY STAR listing shows RF28R7201** on market from Feb 2019). RF28R7351** is treated as a close sibling on the same 28 cu ft body; one forced-defrost write-up is for RF28R7351SG. Years approx. 2019-2023 (start date from ENERGY STAR; end date inferred from retailers listing it as discontinued).
Four-door French-door unit: two fresh-food doors, a convertible FlexZone middle drawer and a bottom freezer drawer, with an ice-and-water dispenser and the ice maker in the upper-left fresh-food door ice room. Samsung's support page calls the cooling system Twin Cooling Plus, meaning separate fresh-food and freezer evaporators and fans. Most service calls are ice-room frost/ice maker jams, fresh-food coil icing (22E family) and sensor or fan codes.
Safety first
- Unplug the refrigerator (or switch off its circuit) before removing covers, fans, heaters, sensors or the machine-compartment panel.
- Shut off and bleed the water supply before opening the water valve or ice maker fill connections; have towels ready.
- Never chip ice off an evaporator with tools: a punctured coil is a sealed-system failure. Thaw with power off, a forced defrost, or gentle steam/warm air (no open flame, no heat gun near plastics).
- Live-voltage checks at the main board or inverter board are caution work: insulated probes, one hand, no jewelry.
- Sealed refrigerant system (compressor replacement, leak repair, recharge, brazing) is blocked: confirm the symptom, protect the food, and refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
Twin Cooling Plus: one evaporator and fan behind the rear fresh-food cover, another behind the freezer rear cover. The main board decides which section gets refrigerant through a valve inside the sealed system, so you never service that valve in the field.
FlexZone: the middle drawer is cooled from the freezer side and its setpoint is chosen on the panel. If it stops holding its selected mode, check its sensor, its air path for ice, and the freezer side first.
Ice room: the ice maker sits in an insulated box in the left fresh-food door, fed cold air by its own fan on this generation of Samsung French-door units, with a heater keeping the fill tube clear. A bad seal or a misaligned door lets moist air in, and frost then jams the fan and the ice maker.
Defrost: each evaporator has its own heater and sensor and the board schedules them separately. Melt water from the fresh-food coil drains to the pan under the cabinet; a frozen fresh-food drain is a classic repeat failure.
