LiftMaster Premium Series AC openers 8355W (belt) and 8365W / 8365-267 / 83650-267 (chain): quick sheet

Covers: LiftMaster Premium Series 1/2 HP AC-motor trolley openers of the Security+ 2.0 / myQ generation: 8355W (belt drive, built-in Wi-Fi), 8365W-267 / 8365-267 (chain drive) and the newer 83650-267 (chain drive with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth). Several sellers use the 8365W, 8365-267 and 83650-267 numbers for closely related units; read the label on the motor head. For the DC chain 8160W/8165W family see the LiftMaster/Chamberlain chain-drive quick sheet.

Dealer-installed, entry-level LiftMaster units with a plain AC motor (no battery backup, no soft start). They share the Security+ 2.0 radio (yellow LEARN button), myQ app control and the same LED / light-flash diagnostic logic as other Chamberlain-built openers of this era. Calls are mostly sensors, limits and force, remotes and Wi-Fi. Deep diagnostics: see the trolley garage door opener field service manual and the opener diagnostic-codes guide.

Safety first

  • Door springs, cables and bottom brackets are under high tension: inspection only; refer spring work to a trained door technician.
  • After any adjustment, the door must reverse on a 2x4 laid flat and on a broken beam.

How it works

A 1/2 HP AC motor drives the trolley through a belt (8355W) or chain (8365 family) on a T-rail. AC units start at full speed; a sudden jerk at start is normal on these, unlike DC soft-start models.

Security+ 2.0 rolling-code radio: yellow LEARN button on the motor head. Remotes, keypads and HomeLink must be Security+ 2.0 compatible.

Built-in Wi-Fi lets the myQ app open, close and report status. The 83650-267 adds Bluetooth for app setup.

Safety reversing sensors (photo eyes) must be installed and aligned or the door will not close from a remote or the app.

Garage door openers: reading LED, arrow and light-flash diagnostic codes (LiftMaster/Chamberlain, Genie)

Openers report problems through the indicator that model has: LiftMaster/Chamberlain uses the LED next to the Learn button or a pair of UP and DOWN arrows (read as a count of UP flashes then DOWN flashes); Genie uses powerhead LEDs and separate sensor LEDs. The model number on the motor label decides which chart applies. The method is the same: identify the indicator, count over two repeats, look up that model's chart.

Garage door opener safety tests: monthly reversal test, photo-eye test and after-adjustment retest

Chamberlain/LiftMaster say the safety reversal system must be tested every month and after any adjustment to force, travel, the door arm, springs, hardware or the floor. Place a 1-1/2 in object (a 2x4 laid flat) centered under the open door and close it: the door must reverse on contact. Then break the photo-eye beam while closing: the door must stop and reverse. If it fails, adjust per the manual or take the opener out of service until a door tech fixes it.

Car HomeLink won't program to a Security+ 2.0 (yellow LEARN) opener

Confirm the opener's radio (yellow LEARN button means Security+ 2.0), then use the vehicle's HomeLink procedure with a fresh remote battery and the 30-second LEARN window. Many older HomeLink vehicles cannot speak Security+ 2.0 and need a Chamberlain/LiftMaster HomeLink compatibility bridge.
