LiftMaster 8550 / 8550W / 8550WLB Elite Series DC belt drive with battery backup: quick sheet
Covers: LiftMaster Elite Series DC belt-drive openers with the built-in 485LM battery backup: the original 8550 (Security+ 2.0, myQ through a separate 828LM Internet Gateway) and the Wi-Fi versions 8550W, 8550WL (lock-capable) and 8550WLB, which Chamberlain groups in one owner's manual with 8550WLB-267, 8557W, 8587W/8587WL, 85503 and WLED. All have the round yellow LEARN button. Units built from 2022 carry a Step Saver Setup sticker under the LEARN button and use a different setup article. Model and serial are on the label on the motor unit. Flash/diagnostic codes are not repeated here: see the LiftMaster / Chamberlain belt-drive quick sheet (quicksheet-liftmaster-chamberlain-belt-drive). Search terms: LiftMaster 8550W beeping, 8550 battery light red, 485LM battery replacement, 8550W won't connect Wi-Fi, LiftMaster Elite battery backup orange light.
A ceiling-mount trolley opener with a DC motor driving a reinforced belt on a steel T-rail, sold under LiftMaster's Elite Series. Its selling point is the integrated 12 V battery that keeps the door working through a power outage, plus myQ smartphone control (built-in Wi-Fi on the W models). Most service calls on these units are about the battery (beeping, red or orange LED), sensors that stop the door from closing, travel that drifts after door work, and Wi-Fi that drops after a router change.
Safety first
- Unplugging does not make this opener safe to work on: the battery can still drive the door and the board. Disconnect the battery leads before working inside the motor unit.
- Never adjust or remove torsion or extension springs, cables or bottom brackets; refer spring work to a trained door technician. Use the emergency release only with the door closed when possible, because a weak spring can let an open door drop.
- Do not use travel or force settings to make a binding door work; fix the door first and always finish with the 1-1/2 in. reversal test.
- On openers built after 2022, Chamberlain notes the lights no longer flash 10 times for a sensor fault during setup; check that the sensor LEDs are on instead.
- myQ, timer-to-close and other unattended-close features are for sectional doors only, not one-piece doors.
- The 485LM is a lead-acid battery: do not short its terminals, and recycle it.
How it works
On house power the logic board runs the DC motor and keeps the 485LM battery charged. When AC is lost, the opener switches to the battery automatically and announces it: the battery LED turns orange and the unit beeps while it moves the door.
Travel limits are electronic. They are set with the black adjustment button and the UP/DOWN arrow buttons on the motor unit; force is then learned automatically as the door runs a full open and close cycle.
The Protector System sensors (amber LED on the sending eye, green on the receiving eye) must see each other before the opener will close the door from a remote, app or timer. A blocked or misaligned beam makes the door reverse and the opener lights flash.
The Wi-Fi radio talks to the myQ app on the 2.4 GHz band only. Its status LED sits inside the black adjustment button and steps from blinking blue (learn mode) to solid green (connected to the server).
