Very common builder-grade Genie openers with chain, belt or ReliaG (screw-style) drives and Safe-T-Beam photo eyes. Two LEDs on the underside of the powerhead (red and green) blink diagnostic counts; both off means normal. Safe-T-Beams have their own red (source) and green (sensor) LEDs. Limits and force are programmed with the powerhead buttons.

Safety first

  • Springs, cables and door balance are blocked: refer to a trained door technician.
  • Unplug before working on the drive or powerhead.
  • Never disconnect the Safe-T-Beams to get a door to close in normal use.

How it works

The powerhead motor drives a chain, belt or ReliaG drive along the rail and moves the carriage connected to the door arm. Open and close limits and force are programmed at the powerhead; if programming is incomplete the red powerhead LED stays solid and the green LED blinks once.

The Safe-T-Beam source (red LED) sends an infrared beam to the sensor (green LED). With good alignment both LEDs are steady. A blinking red source LED means the beam is not received (misaligned, blocked or a defective sensor). The opener will not close with a broken beam; holding the wall button down can force a close for diagnosis.

If the door does not move within 30 seconds of a command the opener stops. If effort exceeds the programmed force the door stops or reverses, which on these openers most often traces back to door binding, springs or a too-tight drive.

Remotes are learned at the powerhead. A vacation lock at the wall console disables remotes while the console still works; this is the first check when only the remotes fail.
