GE JVM3160 over-the-range microwave: quick sheet
Covers: GE JVM3160 1.6 cu. ft. over-the-range microwaves, model pattern JVM3160*F** (e.g. RF SS stainless, DF BB black, DF WW white, DF CC bisque) with multiple production revisions (RF8SS etc.). Approx. 2010-2024; GE now lists JVM3160RFSS as no longer manufactured.
GE's best-known entry-level OTR: a transformer-type microwave (not inverter) with 1,000 W cooking power and a two-speed, 300 CFM vent fan. It is simple and common, so the same few failures repeat: no heat from a door interlock switch or HV diode, keypad (F3) faults, and vent fan or light complaints.
Safety first
- CAUTION: the high-voltage capacitor can hold a lethal charge after the microwave is unplugged. Unplug, wait, then discharge the capacitor through an insulated discharge tool before touching anything in the HV section (transformer, diode, capacitor, magnetron).
- Never run the oven with the outer wrapper off or with an interlock defeated, and never take live readings in the HV circuit.
- After any door, hinge, interlock or waveguide work, check that the door closes squarely and test for microwave leakage with a leakage meter before returning the unit to service.
- An OTR unit is heavy and hangs from a wall plate and top-cabinet bolts: use two people and support it while removing or installing the top bolts.
How it works
Power path: 120 V enters through the line fuse and the door interlock switch chain, then the control's cook relay powers the high-voltage transformer. The transformer, HV capacitor and HV diode form a voltage doubler that feeds the magnetron. Any open interlock, open thermal cutout, blown fuse or failed HV part shows up as 'runs, counts down, no heat'.
Door interlocks: there are primary, secondary and monitor switches. The monitor switch deliberately shorts the line if the others fail closed, which blows the fuse; a blown fuse is therefore a symptom, so always test every switch before replacing the fuse.
Vent and light: the two-speed vent fan and cooktop light run from the control, independent of the cook circuit. A heat sensor can start the vent automatically when the cooktop below gets hot.
Keypad: a membrane keypad on a ribbon; a shorted key is reported as F3 on GE microwaves.
