GE JB645 30-inch freestanding electric range: quick sheet
Covers: GE JB645 freestanding radiant glass-top electric ranges, model pattern JB645*K** (finish letters such as RK SS stainless, DK BB black, DK WW white, plus older EK/FK revisions). Sold for roughly a decade (approx. 2012-2023); GE now lists JB645RKSS as no longer manufactured.
The JB645 is one of GE's highest-volume builder and replacement ranges: a 5.3 cu. ft. self-clean oven under a four-element smoothtop with two dual Power Boil elements. It uses GE's electronic oven control with a touch keypad on the backguard and infinite switches (knobs) for the cooktop. Most calls are sensor and element faults in the oven, keypad (F7/F0) faults, and burned-out radiant elements or infinite switches on the cooktop.
Safety first
- Turn off the range breaker (both legs of the 240 V circuit) before removing any panel; unplugging the cord is not always possible on a pushed-in range.
- Glass cooktops stay hot well after the hot-surface light goes out; let the unit cool before handling elements or the control.
- Install or confirm the anti-tip bracket every time the range is pulled out and pushed back.
- Live voltage checks at the relay board or terminal block are 240 V: use insulated probes and keep one hand clear.
How it works
Cooktop: each radiant element is controlled by its own infinite switch that pulses 240 V on and off; the dual elements add an outer ring through a second switch position. Elements carry a built-in limiter that cuts power if the glass gets too hot, and a hot-surface light is driven from the limiter contacts.
Oven: the electronic control reads the RTD sensor and closes relays to the bake and broil elements. Bake cycles the bottom element with some broil assist during preheat; Broil Hi/Lo runs only the top element. If the reading leaves the expected window the control shows an F-code and drops the heat relays.
Self-clean: the control drives a motorized door lock, confirms lock position through switches, then runs the elements to a high temperature. A failed lock or switch shows as a lock-related F-code and the clean cycle will not start or the door stays locked.
Settings: GE controls hide calibration and preference settings in an SF (special features) menu entered from the keypad, not a component-test mode.
