GE GSS25GYP 25.3 cu ft side-by-side refrigerator: quick sheet
Covers: GE GSS25GYP** (GSS25GYPFS fingerprint-resistant stainless and finish variants) 25.3 cu ft 36-inch side-by-side with exterior ice and water. It belongs to GE's long-running GSS25 side-by-side line; years approx. mid-2010s to 2020s (inferred from listings; no official launch date found).
GE's volume side-by-side: freezer left with the ice maker in the freezer and the dispenser on the freezer door, fresh food right. GE GS/PS side-by-sides use a DC evaporator fan, and the classic failures are defrost (frost on the freezer back wall with a warm fresh-food side), ice maker stoppages and dispenser water-line freezing.
Safety first
- Unplug the refrigerator (or switch off its circuit) before removing covers, fans, heaters, sensors or the machine-compartment panel.
- Shut off and bleed the water supply before opening the water valve or ice maker fill connections; have towels ready.
- Never chip ice off an evaporator with tools: a punctured coil is a sealed-system failure. Thaw with power off, a forced defrost, or gentle steam/warm air (no open flame, no heat gun near plastics).
- Live-voltage checks at the main board or inverter board are caution work: insulated probes, one hand, no jewelry.
- Sealed refrigerant system (compressor replacement, leak repair, recharge, brazing) is blocked: confirm the symptom, protect the food, and refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
Single evaporator behind the freezer rear panel; air reaches the fresh food through a damper/fan path. Sealed-system work is referral only.
Electronic adaptive defrost: heater (glass tube or calrod) under the evaporator, bimetal on the tubing, thermistor feedback to the main board.
DC evaporator fan powered from the main board; a dead fan can be the motor or the board's DC supply.
Ice maker in the freezer feeds an auger/bin; water line to the door runs through the hinge.
