Older Frigidaire / Electrolux freezers with dial control, Temp Alarm switch, Power Freeze and Power Defrost (2001-era use and care P/N 216802800): quick sheet
Covers: Frigidaire chest and upright freezers covered by the 2001 use and care manual P/N 216802800 (Electrolux Home Products / White Consolidated Industries). Many units from that era are still in garages and basements. Features vary by model: some have all of the optional items below, some have none.
Mechanical dial thermostat (inside on uprights, on the left outside wall of chests), optional Temp Alarm with an ON/OFF switch and red light, optional Power Freeze switch, optional Power Defrost plunger, manual defrost with a drain plug on most models (some uprights are frost-free). Typical calls: alarm "going off by itself" after start-up, freezer "not running" because Power Defrost was left pulled out, heavy frost, and GFCI trips.
Safety first
- Unplug before electrical tests; the OFF dial position does not cut power to everything.
- Old freezers left in garages or curbs are a child-entrapment hazard: remove the door before disposal.
- Sealed-system faults: diagnosis only, refer to an EPA 608 certified technician; older units may use refrigerants with recovery requirements.
How it works
Dial control: turning to OFF stops the compressor but does not remove power from other parts (light, alarm). Unplug before electrical work.
Temp Alarm (optional): ships switched OFF. After about 4 hours of running the red light (if fitted) goes out; then switch the alarm ON. It runs on house power, so it cannot alarm during an outage.
Power Freeze (optional switch): drives the cabinet to its coldest; Frigidaire suggests turning it on 24 hours before loading a large amount of unfrozen food, then switching it OFF manually to return to normal operation.
Power Defrost (optional plunger): pull the plunger out with the door open to defrost faster; closing the door pushes the plunger in and ends power defrost. Turn the Temp Alarm off while defrosting.
Fast-freezing shelves on some uprights are refrigerated coils: no metal scrapers on them and they are not adjustable.
