LG French-door and side-by-side refrigerator: field service manual
Covers: LG French-door (LFX/LMX/LRMV and similar, including Door-in-Door / InstaView) and side-by-side (LSXS/LSC and similar) with a linear or inverter compressor and an in-door ice maker (Slim SpacePlus or similar), roughly 2010-2024. Series names only.
Most LG full-size refrigerators run a variable-speed linear or inverter compressor driven by the main board, so there is no start relay to swap. French-door models usually make ice in the left fresh-food door, with cold air ducted from the freezer through the door. Door-in-Door units have an outer door with its own seal. Compressor complaints, ice-maker icing and fan codes make up most LG calls.
Safety first
- The board is live during test mode. Use one hand, insulated probes and no jewelry.
- Unplug the unit before you remove covers or touch fans and heaters.
- The sealed system and the compressor replacement are blocked: refer them to LG service or an EPA 608-certified technician.
- CH/CL leak messages or a refrigerant smell: ventilate (R-600a is flammable), avoid sparks and refer.
How it works
The refrigerant loop follows the usual concept: compressor and condenser at the bottom rear, and a freezer evaporator behind the freezer back panel. Most models use a single evaporator. The sealed system is not field-serviceable without EPA 608 certification.
On single-evaporator units the freezer fan pushes air across the coil, and a motorized damper meters cold air into the fresh-food section. A separate ice fan blows freezer air through ducts in the cabinet and the left door into the ice compartment. If those ducts or the ice-compartment seal leak, frost forms and the ice fan or ice maker freezes.
The linear compressor's piston is driven back and forth by an electric motor rather than by a crankshaft. The board varies its speed, so it isn't started by a PTC relay. The board can show a compressor relay or drive fault (Er 22/33) or flash an LED fault count on some boards.
Defrost is adaptive and board-controlled. The board counts compressor run time, runs the heater until the defrost sensor reads clear, and logs Er dH if defrost takes too long. A thermal fuse in the heater circuit is the safety. Water drains to the pan below.
