Inverter drives in appliances: rectifier, DC bus and output stage, safe checks and when to refer
Covers: Variable-speed (inverter) drives in refrigerators, freezers, mini-splits and inverter window/portable ACs, plus the similar drives in direct-drive washers and BLDC pumps. Electrical concepts and safe checks only. Anything that opens the sealed refrigerant system is blocked (EPA 608).
An inverter board turns household AC into a high-voltage DC supply and then chops that DC into a variable-frequency three-phase output that sets compressor or motor speed. The board stores dangerous energy in its capacitors after the plug is pulled. Most inverter 'compressor' failures are actually board, harness or command problems, and those can be checked electrically without touching the refrigerant circuit.
Safety first
- The DC bus can hold a lethal charge after power is removed. Wait, then measure 0 V DC at the bus test points before touching the board.
- Do not disconnect the compressor or fan leads before the bus has drained; the windings help discharge it.
- Mini-split interconnect wiring may carry line voltage on some terminals; read the diagram before measuring.
- Any work that opens the refrigerant circuit (compressor replacement, recovery, brazing, charging) is EPA 608 work: blocked, refer.
How it works
Rectifier: line voltage passes through a bridge rectifier and is smoothed by large capacitors to form the DC bus. On many designs a power-factor stage sits in between. The DC bus sits at roughly 1.4 times the AC supply voltage, so a 230 V mini-split runs a bus above 300 V DC.
Output stage: power switches (IGBTs or MOSFETs, often in one module bolted to a heat sink) connect the compressor's three terminals (U, V, W) to the positive and negative bus in a fast sequence. The switching rate sets output frequency, and frequency sets speed.
Control: a main board decides how fast the compressor should run from thermistors, pressure data or setpoint and sends a command to the inverter (by a signal wire or serial link). On some refrigerators the drive is part of the main board; on others it is a separate board near the compressor.
Protection: the inverter watches current, voltage and temperature. When it trips it stops the compressor and reports a fault through an LED blink code or an error code on the main display. The meaning is model-specific.
Stored energy: when power is removed, the bus capacitors stay charged until bleed resistors or connected windings drain them. LEDs going dark does not prove the bus is safe.
