Induction cooktops and ranges: field service manual
Covers: Induction cooktops and induction ranges from GE, Whirlpool-family, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire and Bosch. Field-level diagnosis only; internal power electronics are board-swap work for trained techs.
Induction zones heat the pan, not the glass: a power (generator/inverter) board drives a high-frequency current through a copper coil under each zone, and the magnetic pan base heats directly. Most service calls are cookware (pan not detected), normal noises mistaken for faults, cooling-fan or overheat errors, and generator board failures. Repair is diagnosis plus module replacement, not component-level board repair.
Safety first
- Trained techs only inside the unit: generator boards carry line voltage and capacitors can stay charged after power-off
- Turn off the breaker and wait before touching boards
- Never run a zone with the glass removed
- Customers with implanted medical devices should follow their doctor's and the manufacturer's guidance about induction cooking
How it works
The generator board rectifies line power and switches it with power transistors (IGBTs) into a high-frequency current through the zone coil. A ferrous pan above the coil closes the magnetic circuit and heats.
Pan detection: the board senses the load the pan presents. Non-magnetic, too-small or off-center pans are rejected; the zone shows a pan symbol (Samsung shows an underlined u) and shuts off after about a minute.
The boards make heat themselves, so a cooling fan pulls air across the heat sinks. It can keep running after cooking ends until parts cool; that is normal.
Temperature sensors under the glass and on the heat sinks protect against overheating; the control cuts power or shows an overheat or sensor code when limits are exceeded.
Normal noises: buzzing from some cookware, a low hum that rises with power level, a higher hum when two zones run different cookware, relay clicks and fan noise.
