Haier compact refrigerators and wine coolers: field service manual
Covers: Haier compact (dorm/office) refrigerators and wine coolers sold in the US. Only general checks are covered; model-specific values must come from the tech sheet or owner's manual.
Haier compacts come in two cooling types. Compressor models use a small sealed system with a mechanical thermostat, often manual or simple timed defrost; wine coolers may be compressor-based or thermoelectric (Peltier module with fans and heat sinks, no refrigerant). Identify the type first: a thermoelectric unit is fully serviceable with ordinary electrical checks, while a compressor unit's sealed system is off-limits.
Safety first
- Unplug before servicing.
- Sealed refrigerant system: diagnose only; refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
- Power-supply boards in thermoelectric units carry line voltage; test with care.
How it works
Compressor compacts: the thermostat starts and stops the compressor; on two-door units a defrost timer or control periodically warms the evaporator. A thermostat with stuck contacts keeps the compressor running nonstop.
Thermoelectric wine coolers: a DC power supply feeds a Peltier module; the cold side cools the cabinet through a fan and heat sink, the hot side dumps heat to the room through another fan and finned sink. They can only pull the cabinet a limited amount below room temperature, so warm rooms (garages, attics) defeat them.
