GE / GE Profile / Café side-by-side and French-door refrigerator: field service manual

Covers: GE-built side-by-side (GSS/GSH/PSS-type electronic units and older mechanical-timer units) and French-door bottom-freezer models (GFE/PFE/CFE-type), roughly 2000-2024. Series prefixes only.

GE electronic refrigerators run a main board (often at the back of the cabinet) with adaptive defrost. On 2012-and-newer units the board schedules defrost, while older units use a mechanical defrost timer. Many use low-voltage DC evaporator and condenser fans driven by the board. Side-by-sides with five or more touch pads have a built-in diagnostic mode. Defrost failures, ice maker faults and fan or board issues are the bread-and-butter calls.

Safety first

  • Unplug the unit before you remove covers.
  • DC fan voltage and board output checks are live tests: use insulated probes.
  • The sealed system is blocked: refer it to an EPA 608-certified technician.

How it works

The sealed loop is conceptually standard: compressor and condenser at the bottom rear, with the evaporator behind the freezer back panel. Do not service the sealed side without EPA 608 certification.

Single-evaporator airflow: the freezer evaporator fan supplies the freezer and, through a damper and on many models a fresh-food fan, the fridge. The board reads the fridge and freezer thermistors and opens the damper as needed.

Adaptive defrost: the board counts compressor run time and door openings and energizes the heater. The defrost thermostat (bimetal) is closed when cold and opens once the coil warms, which ends the heat. Older units use a mechanical timer that you can advance by hand to test.

Many GE evaporator fans are DC motors fed by the board. A GE procedure for GS/PS models checks DC voltage at the fan connector with the freezer thermistor warmed: about 13 VDC on one pair and 8-13 VDC on the other. Confirm the wire colors and values on the model's tech sheet.
