GE Monogram & Café: what differs from standard GE (built-in refrigerators, ranges)
Covers: GE Monogram built-in side-by-side/bottom-freezer refrigerators (ZIS/ZIC/ZISB/ZISS/ZISW families) and Café/Monogram ranges. Café dishwashers are covered in the GE dishwasher manual (slug ge-dishwasher).
Monogram and Café are GE Appliances brands; ranges largely share GE's F-code families, so the GE range content applies, with the usual caution that exact meanings vary by model. The big difference is on Monogram built-in refrigerators: unlike Sub-Zero they use a single evaporator in the freezer and an electronic damper that meters cold air into the fresh-food side, plus a separate quick-chill damper on some models. Newer units may use an inverter-driven compressor.

How it works
Built-in refrigerator airflow: one evaporator sits high in the freezer; the evaporator fan pushes air into the freezer and, when the control board opens the fresh-food damper (top rear of the fresh-food section), into the fresh-food side. Air returns to the freezer through a return passage near the top between the sections; on at least some 36/42 in units this passage has no damper.
Return-vent icing: a technician on Appliantology traced 'freezer very cold, fresh food warm' on a related unit to the return passage icing shut in humid weather, made worse by leaking door seals. Melting the ice restored cooling temporarily; door seals and the vent opening were the lasting fix. Treat as a field pattern, not a factory bulletin.
Diagnostics: GE built-in units have a service/test mode with numbered tests (forum examples include 0-3 and 0-4 communication checks between the temperature control, dispenser board and main board, and a freezer fan test). Entry sequences differ by generation and one ZISS420 owner reported the common sequence did not work; use the GE service manual for the exact model.
Café/Monogram ranges: common F-code families (overheat, sensor open/short, keypad) match GE ranges. If a function code repeats after the knobs are turned off and the oven cools for an hour, cut power 30 seconds and retest before ordering parts.
