GE dryer (electric & gas): field service manual
Covers: GE and Hotpoint 27-inch dryers, mechanical-timer and electronic models (E-code models).
GE dryers range from simple timer units to electronic models that report E-codes in service mode (thermistor, overheat, heater, motor, door, moisture, speed sensor). The heat circuit is the familiar series chain of protectors plus a thermistor or cycling thermostat.
Safety first
- Live 240 V checks are caution steps
- Gas: electrical tests only; refer gas work to a licensed gas technician
- Never bypass thermal protectors
How it works
Electric heat: element in series with a high-limit thermostat and a thermal protector; the control (or cycling thermostat on timer units) switches heat. Electronic models read a thermistor on the blower housing or exhaust duct.
Gas heat: hot-surface igniter, flame sensor and valve coils in the standard US sequence.
Airflow: blower to rear exhaust; newer models with vent monitoring may show Clg (unverified).
Moisture sensing: bars inside the drum; residue causes E7-type complaints on models that report it.
