GE Appliances-built brands: Hotpoint, RCA (to 2002), Haier-era products and GE-branded water heaters

Covers: Appliances designed or supported by GE Appliances (Louisville, KY), including the Hotpoint value line, RCA-badged appliances built until 2002, Haier-branded products marketed by GE Appliances since 2017, GE-branded water heaters (Rheem-built from 1998, GE-built gas tanks from 2022) and Kenmore 363.

Cross-checkedBrands: GE, Hotpoint, RCA, Haier, Kenmore3 components

GE Appliances has been owned by Haier since 2016 and keeps the GE name under license. Hotpoint (Americas) is its value badge on GE platforms; RCA appliances were a GE-supported second label until 2002 and decode with GE serial letters. Haier-branded products in the US are marketed and supported through GE Appliances' processes. The big pitfall is water heaters: older GE tanks came from Rheem, newer gas tanks from GE's own Camden, SC plant.

Safety first

  • Water heater gas valve, burner and venting work is blocked: diagnose and refer.
  • Electric water heater element tests are live-voltage hazards when powered: caution.

How it works

Plants (GE Appliances' own list): Louisville (washers, dryers, dishwashers, bottom-freezer and multi-door refrigerators), Decatur AL (top-freezer refrigerators for GE and Hotpoint), LaFayette GA (ranges, cooktops, wall ovens; the former Roper plant), Selmer TN (premium refrigeration and Zoneline PTACs), Camden SC (water heaters, reopened 2022).

Hotpoint: shares GE platforms and parts; model letters H on refrigerators (see brands.json). Existing manual hotpoint-ge-value-appliances covers what differs.

RCA: GE's own support page says RCA appliances were not made after 2002 and decodes their serials with the GE two-letter month/year code, which marks them as GE-supported units. Current RCA-branded compact appliances come from a licensee and are unrelated to GE (single source).

Haier: GE Appliances launched the Haier brand in the US on 1 January 2017, starting with small-space products (24-inch ranges and ovens, compact refrigerators, 18-inch dishwashers, 24-inch washer/dryer combos). Haier compact units have their own manuals in OnCall Tech.

GE water heaters: Rheem began supplying GE-branded water heaters to Home Depot in 1998; GE Appliances started producing GE-branded gas water heaters at Camden, SC in 2022. Two different builders under the same badge.

Blower runs nonstop and no cooling on a new HVAC system: A2L refrigerant leak sensor

A2L systems carry a refrigerant leak sensor near the indoor coil. When it reports a leak, or when the sensor fails or loses communication, the control stops the compressor and runs the blower to dilute any refrigerant. This guide separates a sensor or wiring fault from a possible real leak; any real leak is referred to an EPA 608 technician.

Confirming an inverter board's DC bus is discharged before you touch it

Inverter boards store high-voltage DC in large capacitors after the power is off, and a dark LED does not mean the board is safe. Remove power, wait the maker's time, then measure the DC bus at the marked test points until it reads 0 V. Only then unplug loads or handle the board.

Load will not turn off: shorted triac or welded relay (board vs load)

When a load runs with no command, the board output that feeds it is usually shorted: triacs most often fail shorted and relay contacts can weld closed after inrush. Confirm the output is truly on with the load connected (not a ghost reading), then test the load itself, because a shorted or seized load is what usually kills the output.

ECM blower motors in depth: constant-torque vs constant-airflow, connectors and safe checks

Electronically commutated (ECM) blower motors in residential furnaces, air handlers, fan coils and package units: constant-torque tap motors (X13-style and similar) and programmed constant-airflow / variable-speed motors (ECM 2.3, 2.5, 3.0 and similar families). Concepts and safe checks only; the equipment's own wiring diagram and the motor maker's guide always win.

Inverter drives in appliances: rectifier, DC bus and output stage, safe checks and when to refer

Variable-speed (inverter) drives in refrigerators, freezers, mini-splits and inverter window/portable ACs, plus the similar drives in direct-drive washers and BLDC pumps. Electrical concepts and safe checks only. Anything that opens the sealed refrigerant system is blocked (EPA 608).

Control board output devices: relays, triacs and transistor drivers, and how loads kill them

Output switching parts on appliance control boards (washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, ranges, microwaves): electromechanical relays, triacs with their snubbers and opto-isolators, and transistor/MOSFET drivers for DC loads. Explains failure patterns and what to measure; no board-level repair.
