Electrolux-built sister brands: Frigidaire, Gibson, Tappan, Kelvinator, White-Westinghouse (and the HVAC name trap)
Covers: North American appliances sold under Electrolux-owned names since 1986 (refrigerators, freezers, ranges, dishwashers, laundry, room AC); Kenmore Electrolux prefixes; and the separate licensed HVAC equipment carrying Frigidaire, Gibson, Tappan, Westinghouse or Maytag badges.
White Consolidated Industries (WCI) gathered Westinghouse's appliance business (1975, origin of the White-Westinghouse name), Frigidaire (from GM, 1979), Kelvinator, Gibson and Philco; Electrolux bought WCI in 1986. Since then these names have shared Frigidaire platforms. The trap: a furnace or central AC with a Frigidaire, Gibson, Tappan, Westinghouse or Maytag badge is NOT Electrolux or Whirlpool equipment, but a Nortek (formerly Nordyne) product made under license.
Safety first
- Gas ranges and furnaces under any badge: gas work is blocked, diagnose electrical side only and refer.
How it works
Appliances under these badges use Frigidaire/Electrolux engineering, parts and serial format (two letters, then a year digit and week).
Model letters: F = Frigidaire, G = current Gallery, FG = older Gallery, FP = older Professional, E = Electrolux brand (see brands.json). Gallery and Professional are Frigidaire tiers, not separate makers.
Sister badges were used mostly on value models and specific retail channels; the names come and go, but the platform stays Frigidaire for appliances.
HVAC: Nortek Global HVAC lists Frigidaire, Maytag and Gibson residential equipment and states that Frigidaire, Maytag, Westinghouse, Broan and NuTone marks are used under license; Tappan was revived for HVAC by Nordyne in 1998 under an Electrolux license. Service those with Nortek/Nordyne documents.
Room AC and dehumidifiers with the Frigidaire name are frequently built by Asian OEMs (Midea window ACs GHWQ; Gree dehumidifiers 2007-2008 production; see the Asian OEM manual).
