Dryer venting & installation: field manual
Covers: Residential vented dryers (electric and gas), all brands. Exhaust duct rules, cord types and gas-install boundaries.
Most no-heat, overheat and slow-dry calls start at the exhaust. This manual sums up the code baseline and how manufacturer install charts work, plus the 3-wire vs 4-wire cord concept. The manufacturer's installation instructions for the exact model are the controlling document.
Safety first
- No plastic or foil duct
- No screws protruding into the duct
- Live receptacle checks are caution steps
- Gas connection: licensed gas technician only; on gas odor, leave and call the utility
How it works
A vented dryer moves a large volume of hot, humid air; every foot of duct and every elbow adds resistance. Restriction raises exhaust temperature, shortens heat-on time, lengthens drying and trips safety devices.
Code baseline (IRC M1502): 4-inch smooth metal duct, 35 ft maximum developed length, deducting 5 ft per 90-degree bend and 2.5 ft per 45-degree bend, unless the manufacturer's instructions allow a longer run.
Manufacturer charts set the allowable length by duct type, hood type and elbow count. A side or bottom exhaust counts as an extra 90-degree turn.
Electric dryers connect with a 3-wire cord (two hots, neutral; cabinet bonded to neutral by a strap) or a 4-wire cord (two hots, neutral, separate ground; strap removed). The 1996 NEC ended the neutral-as-ground method for new circuits; older 3-wire circuits still exist.
