Batch-feed disposal will not start with the stopper in place

Batch-feed disposals run only when the stopper closes a switch on the unit, either a mechanical switch pushed by a cam on the stopper or a magnetic reed switch on older models. Check the reset button and power first, then the stopper cam/magnet and the start switch.

Choosing disposal horsepower and type

Higher HP grinds more types of scraps; match to household size. Continuous feed needs a switch; batch feed starts with a stopper.

Dishwasher won't drain or drains into the sink after a new disposal install

New disposals ship with a plastic knockout plug sealing the dishwasher inlet. If the dishwasher hose was connected without knocking it out, the dishwasher cannot drain. Knock the plug out and remove it from the chamber; also check the hose loop or air gap and the 7/8 in inlet connection.

Disposal runs but grinds slowly or leaves chunks

A running motor with poor grinding points to a partial jam, impellers (lugs) stuck in place, packed buildup around the grind ring, too little water flow, or worn grind components. On older units a worn grind ring often means replacing the disposal.

Disposal sink flange leaking: reseal

Remove the disposal, reseat the sink flange with fresh plumber's putty and gaskets, then remount and leak test.

Disposals on septic systems

Manufacturers say disposals are safe for properly maintained septic systems; septic-specific models add enzymes. This is maker guidance, not independent proof.

Garbage disposal dead: no hum, no power

Work from the simplest cause: the motor overload (red reset), then the breaker and outlet, then the switch type (wall switch, air switch, batch-feed stopper switch). Replace the disposal only after power is proven at the outlet and the reset does nothing.

Garbage disposal hums but won't turn (jammed)

A humming disposal almost always has a jammed turntable: a hard object or packed waste is stopping the motor. Free the plate with the hex wrench from below (or a wrench on the impellers from above), clear the debris, then reset the overload. Never put a hand in the grinding chamber.

Garbage disposal leaking: top, middle or bottom

Find the exact leak point with the paper-towel test. Top = sink flange seal or mounting; middle = dishwasher inlet or discharge elbow; bottom = water inside the housing. Flange and connection leaks are fixable; water from the motor housing itself usually means internal seal failure and replacement.

Garbage disposal noisy: grinding, rattling or vibration

A foreign object in the chamber is the most common cause of loud metallic noise. Loose mounting, a worn cushion mount and worn bearings cause vibration and rumble. Odor and visible waste at the flange after running are also signs of a partial jam.

Garbage disposal smells

Food residue builds up under the splash guard and in the chamber. Clean the baffle and flush with cold water while running.

Garbage disposal trips breaker or reset button keeps popping

The reset button is the motor's overload protector; jams, overfeeding and long runs trip it. A breaker trip points to wiring, a shorted motor or a jam. Repeated trips after clearing jams = worn motor.

Sink water backs up into dishwasher

The dishwasher drain needs a high loop or air gap and must connect above the disposal. A clogged disposal or trap also pushes water back.

Sink with disposal drains slowly or backs up

If the disposal spins and the water swirls but will not go down, the blockage is in the trap or drain line, not the disposal. Clean the baffle and chamber, plunge carefully, then open the trap. Do not use chemical drain cleaners in a disposal.
