Refrigerator replacement fit check: opening, hinge-side wall clearance, door swing and the delivery path
Most failed refrigerator deliveries are measuring problems. Measure the opening at its tightest point (height including new flooring, width including countertop overhang, depth to trim), compare with the new model's dimensions with hinges and handles, and add the maker's air clearances. Then check door swing: a French-door unit against a side wall needs extra room on the hinge side for the door and handle to clear, or the bins will not pull out. Last, walk the delivery path from the truck to the kitchen: the narrowest opening must be wider than the fridge's smaller dimension (width or depth).
Before you start
- If the old unit is pulled out to measure, unplug it and shut off the water line first
- Old refrigerators must go to proper refrigerant recovery when hauled away; do not cut lines (see old-appliance-haul-away-refrigerant-disposal-rules)
