Refrigerator in a cold garage: freezer section thaws in winter while the fridge side seems fine (low-ambient pattern, garage-ready models)
Standard refrigerators are built for indoor rooms. Whirlpool gives about 55-110 F as the recommended range; GE does not recommend installing a refrigerator where it drops below 60 F unless its manual says otherwise. When the room is cold, the control (usually sensing the fresh-food side) thinks no cooling is needed, the compressor runs little or not at all, and the freezer warms. Near 32 F there may be no cooling at all, and GE warns that very cold or very hot rooms can harm the compressor. The fix is a unit rated for the space (garage-ready, often 38-110 F) or a different location, not a new part.
Before you start
- No hazardous work in this diagnosis. Do not install aftermarket heater or garage kits that GE says not to use; follow the manufacturer for each model.
- Food safety: a freezer that has been above 0 F for days may have thawed and refrozen food; customer decides with USDA guidance.
