Refrigerator smells bad inside even after cleaning (drain trough, drain pan, gaskets, ice and water)
Lasting odors usually come from places the customer never cleans: spills under crispers and deli drawers, the defrost drain trough and tube, the drain pan under the unit, the gasket folds, an old water filter, or stale ice. After a long power outage the odor can soak into insulation and the evaporator area. Work from the easy places to the hidden ones and treat persistent odor after a spoilage event as a bigger job.
Before you start
- Unplug the refrigerator before pulling the drain pan or cleaning near the condenser and wiring
- Do not mix bleach with other cleaners; rinse well after any bleach solution
- Do not use sharp tools in the drain hole or on the evaporator: the coil and tubing are part of the sealed system
