Recall reference: Water heaters, furnaces & space-conditioning (CPSC 2015–2026)

Covers: Significant CPSC recalls announced 2015–2026 for water heaters (tank and tankless), gas furnaces, boilers, air handlers, heat pumps and packaged units. Most gas-appliance recalls here are carbon-monoxide or gas-leak hazards and are blocked items for our users.

Cross-checkedBrands: Rheem, A. O. Smith, State, Navien, Giant, Camplux, VST (VESTA), Goodman, Amana, Daikin, Trane, American Standard, Armstrong Air, AirEase, Triangle Tube, Lochinvar15 components

Many of the most serious recalls in this group involve gas combustion, venting or carbon monoxide. For those, the tech's job is to recognize the unit, give the immediate safety steps (shut off gas, ventilate, CO alarms, leave if an alarm sounds) and refer the customer to the recall program or a licensed gas/HVAC contractor; no repair procedure. Electrical recalls (shock, overheating controls) are caution items. Read model and serial from the rating plate (water heaters: lower front or near the gas valve; furnaces: inside the door; boilers: front or side panel), then search cpsc.gov/Recalls, SaferProducts.gov and the maker's lookup.

Safety first

  • Gas valves, burners, venting and CO are blocked items: give the immediate safety steps and refer to a licensed gas or HVAC contractor; no procedure
  • If a CO alarm is sounding, everyone leaves the building and calls 911 or the gas utility from outside
  • On recalled units with disconnect or grounding defects, verify power is off with a meter before touching anything
  • Never tell a customer a recall is still open or closed without checking the current notice; some programs end (Triangle Tube)

How it works

A recall is a corrective action the manufacturer announces, usually jointly with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), when a product has a defect that can hurt someone. The fix (repair, replacement part, replacement unit or refund) is paid for by the manufacturer. A recall does not expire just because the warranty did, but programs can change over time, and a few end when a company closes, so always read the current notice.

Affected units are defined by model number, and often by a serial range or a date code. The CPSC notice says where the rating label is and which numbers are included. Copy the full model and serial from the label (photograph it), then compare against the notice or enter them in the maker's recall lookup. Many recalls cover only part of a model's production, so a model match alone is not proof; the serial or date code decides. When the notice lists dozens of models, use the maker's lookup instead of reading the list by eye.

If the unit is included, stop and advise. Tell the customer what the hazard is, what the notice says to do in the meantime (unplug, shut off gas, stop using one function), and how to register: the recall phone line or web page. Do not repair or replace the recalled component outside the program, and do not bill for work the manufacturer will do for free. Note the recall number, model and serial on your ticket. If the call was for a different, unrelated fault, explain the recall first and let the customer decide whether to wait for the recall visit.

Rheem / Ruud / Richmond atmospheric gas tank with electronic thermopile control: quick sheet (diagnostic and electrical side)

Residential atmospheric-vent, standing-pilot gas tanks (Performance, Performance Plus, Professional Classic and the Ruud/Richmond equivalents, typically XG-prefix model numbers) built with the Guardian-style FVIR combustion chamber and a self-powered electronic gas control (White-Rodgers or Honeywell, depending on year). Power-vent and condensing Rheem tanks use different controls and are not covered here. Gas-side work (gas control, pilot, burner, thermopile replacement, venting) is diagnosis-and-refer only.

A.O. Smith ProLine / Signature and State atmospheric gas tanks: quick sheet (diagnostic and electrical side)

Residential atmospheric-vent, standing-pilot FVIR gas tanks: A.O. Smith ProLine (plumber channel, e.g. GCR and GCG families), A.O. Smith Signature (sold at Lowe's) and comparable State models, with a thermopile-powered electronic gas control and status LED (Honeywell-type control on most current units). Power-vent, direct-vent and condensing models are excluded.
