Emerson / Copeland Sensi smart thermostats (Sensi, Sensi Lite, Sensi Touch, Touch 2): quick sheet
Covers: Sensi Wi-Fi thermostats: classic Sensi (ST55 style) and Sensi Lite, Sensi Touch (ST75) and Sensi Touch 2. The Sensi brand moved from Emerson to Copeland; support pages live on both domains.
Popular contractor-friendly smart thermostats. The key install question is power: the Touch and Touch 2 need a C wire on every system, while the classic Sensi and Sensi Lite can run some conventional systems on batteries but need a C wire on heat-only, cool-only and heat pump systems per the manufacturer.
Safety first
- Turn off HVAC power before wiring.
- Not for line-voltage heaters.
How it works
The thermostat connects to standard 24 V terminals (R/Rc/Rh, C, W/W2, Y/Y2, G, O/B). Heat pumps use O/B for the reversing valve; the outdoor equipment setting is changed from conventional AC to heat pump in the setup menu.
When labelling an old thermostat's wires: a wire on the old B terminal is treated as a common (C) only if the old thermostat also had a separate O wire; if there was no O wire, the B wire is the heat pump changeover.
When there is no C wire the manufacturer's order of preference is: use an unused spare conductor, repurpose the G wire (losing independent fan control), or install a common-wire kit.
After wiring, the installer should run heat, cool and fan from the thermostat to confirm each output.
