York YCJD (13 SEER) and YCJF (14.5 SEER) single-stage air conditioners (R-410A, Johnson Controls): quick sheet
Covers: York (Johnson Controls Unitary Products) single-stage R-410A split condensing units: YCJD 13 SEER (sizes 18-60, technical guide 840569-YTG-C-1112) and YCJF 14.5 SEER (sizes 18-60, technical guide 700695-YTG-B-0812). Model string example YCJD36S41S1HE: capacity 18-60 (kBtu/h) + S41S1 or S41S2 configuration, then optional H = factory hard start kit, E = ElectroFin coated coil. Coleman and Luxaire sell Johnson Controls platforms under their own prefixes; read the nameplate and match the technical guide. Newer SEER2 York lines (YC2E, YC3, R-454B) are different products. Search terms: YCJD36S41S1, YCJD24S41S1H, YCJF36S41S1, York 13 SEER condenser hard start.
Value-tier York condensers. The YCJD uses a rotary (18), reciprocating (24-48) or scroll (60) compressor; the YCJF uses scroll compressors in all sizes. The big service point on YCJD: York says sizes 18-48 need a hard start kit when matched to a TXV indoor coil (models ending in H have it installed at the factory). Otherwise these are contactor / capacitor / fan / compressor units with 24 V control.
Safety first
- Lock out power; discharge start and run capacitors.
- Refrigerant work is blocked: EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
Y from the thermostat closes the contactor; line voltage runs the compressor and the PSC fan through the run capacitor.
YCJD with a TXV (non-bleed) indoor coil: the compressor starts against pressure, so York requires a hard start kit on sizes 18-48. YCJF scroll models do not need one with a TXV per York's table.
York also lists a start assist kit (S1-2SA067*) for low-voltage areas and S1-1TVM series TXV kits.
