Whirlpool WML75011 (HZ/HW/HB) 1.1 cu ft low-profile microwave hood combination: quick sheet

Covers: Whirlpool WML75011HZ, HW, HB and Y-prefixed Canadian versions. Retailers mark it discontinued and point to the WMML5530RZ as its successor (listed at 450 CFM, 4-speed). Low-profile means it is about 10-5/16 in tall and fits where a standard OTR (about 16-17 in tall) would crowd the cooktop.

Cross-checkedBrands: Whirlpool6 components

Low-profile OTR made to replace an under-cabinet hood without losing headroom over the cooktop. The cavity is small (1.1 cu ft, about 7 in interior height), so 'my plate does not fit' is a design limit, not a fault. The vent is the strong point (400 CFM). Field work is the usual microwave set (door switches, HV parts by a trained tech, vent motor and lights) in a tighter cabinet.

Safety first

  • CAUTION: the high-voltage capacitor can hold a lethal charge after the unit is unplugged. Only a trained tech opens the cabinet: unplug, wait, then discharge the capacitor with an insulated discharge tool before touching the HV section (transformer, capacitor, diode, magnetron).
  • Never run the oven with the wrapper or panels off, with an interlock defeated, or empty; never take live readings in the HV circuit.
  • After any door, hinge, latch or interlock work, confirm the door closes squarely and run a leakage survey (see microwave-leakage-limit-interlock-check-after-door-repair).
  • OTR units are heavy and hang on a wall plate plus top-cabinet bolts: two people, and support the unit before removing the top bolts.

How it works

Standard microwave HV circuit in a shallow cabinet; the magnetron and HV parts are packed close together, so take photos before unplugging anything.

Hood side is rated 400 CFM, higher than most standard OTRs, and is set up for the house's vent mode at install.

Because it sits closer to the cooktop than a standard OTR, keep the maker's minimum height above the cooking surface from the install sheet.

Microwave interior paint peeling, chipped or rusted (when to stop using it)

The cavity coating protects the steel; once bare metal is exposed it can rust and act as an arcing point, and flaking paint can fall into food. Small, isolated chips on an otherwise sound cavity can sometimes be touched up with a coating made for microwave cavities, fully cured before use. Widespread peeling, rust that has pitted or holed the metal, or any damage to the door, choke or seal area means the oven should be retired. Never use ordinary paint.

Over-the-range microwave duct run: size, equivalent length and when to recirculate instead

OTR microwave blowers are small, so the duct decides how well they vent. The common target on manufacturer install sheets is a 3-1/4 x 10 in rectangular duct or a round duct of at least 6 in through a rectangular-to-round transition, with the whole run kept under the maker's equivalent-length limit (GE sheets seen: 120 or 140 equivalent feet depending on the document). Every fitting counts as extra feet. This guide shows how to add up a run before you cut holes, and when the honest answer is to leave the unit on recirculate with a charcoal filter.

Microwave door, interlock and leakage: what the federal standard requires and what to check after a door or switch repair

US microwave ovens are built to the FDA performance standard (21 CFR 1030.10): leakage may not exceed 1 mW/cm² as sold and 5 mW/cm² for the life of the oven, measured about 5 cm (2 in) from the surface, and every oven must have two independent interlocks plus a monitoring system that stops the oven if the interlocks fail. In the field that means a damaged door, hinge or seal is a stop-use condition, every interlock part goes back exactly as designed, and a door or switch repair should end with a leakage survey using a microwave survey meter. This guide covers the checks; it does not cover high-voltage work beyond the standard discharge warning.
