Best-selling Whirlpool 29-inch gas dryers on the electronic-console platform with AutoDry moisture sensing. Same drum, belt, rollers, motor and thermistor logic as the electric twins; heat comes from a hot-surface (glow-bar) igniter, a radiant flame sensor and a two-coil gas valve. Techs diagnose the ignition sequence electrically; anything that carries gas (valve body, line, orifice, pressure) is referral only. Field reports: no heat from coils that test good cold but fail hot, open thermal fuse from poor venting, and occasionally a stuck valve.
Safety first
- Unplug and close the dryer's gas shut-off before opening panels.
- Gas valve body, gas line, orifice and pressure work are blocked: refer to a licensed gas technician.
- If you smell gas: no switches, no flames, leave and call the gas utility.
- Live-voltage tests at the igniter or coils are caution work.
- The igniter is fragile and very hot; do not touch it.
How it works
Motor runs the drum by belt and turns the blower; the control enables heat once the motor runs and the door is closed.
Ignition: the igniter heats while the radiant sensor is closed (cold). When the sensor sees heat it opens, which lets the secondary coil open the valve fully and the igniter drops out. If the coils weaken hot, the burner lights then goes out, and the igniter recycles.
Temperature is regulated by an exhaust thermistor read by the control; a thermal fuse and high-limit protect the cabinet. AF / Check Vent indicates restricted airflow.
Supply: 120 V, 15 A for motor and controls; natural gas from the factory, with LP conversion done by a licensed gas technician.
