Whirlpool HybridCare heat-pump dryer (27-inch, ventless): field service manual
Covers: Whirlpool HybridCare full-size ventless heat-pump dryers (WHD-series, about 2015 onward). Series names only.
A full-size 27-inch ventless dryer that dries with a heat pump and drains condensate through a pump to a standpipe or sink. It has a lint screen in the door opening plus a HybridCare filter in a lower cabinet, and a permanent metal screen in front of the evaporator. Lint that gets past the filters onto the coils is the main long-term problem.
Safety first
- Unplug before service.
- Sealed system: EPA 608-certified technician only.
- Fins are sharp.
How it works
Air loop: air leaves the drum through the door lint screen, then the HybridCare filter in the bottom cabinet and a fixed metal screen, then passes the evaporator (moisture condenses) and the condenser (air reheats) before returning to the drum. Whirlpool describes it as recycling the same air through a refrigeration system.
Water: condensate collects in a reservoir and a dedicated drain pump sends it to a standpipe, laundry tub or washer drain. A float in that reservoir can be fouled by lint.
Cooling: a cooling fan screen at the lower right rear lets the heat pump reject heat into the room; it must be vacuumed and kept clear.
Service access: thorough coil cleaning requires disassembly (top, front, belt, blower, drain pump and reed lint switch per Whirlpool's job aid); owners report several hours for the job. The owner's manual says coil lint removal is a servicer task, about every two years or more often.
