Trane XR14 / XR16 and American Standard Silver 14 / 16 outdoor AC and heat pumps (4TTR4, 4TTR6, 4TWR4, 4TWR6): quick sheet
Covers: Trane XR-series split outdoor units on R-410A: XR14 air conditioner 4TTR4 and heat pump 4TWR4 (1.5-5 ton, single-stage); XR16 air conditioner 4TTR6 and heat pump 4TWR6. Generation matters for the XR16: older 4TTR6 units (suffixes such as B or J, rated about 16 SEER) are single-stage; the 2023+ N-suffix units (e.g. 4TTR6036N1000A, 4TWR6036N1000A, up to 16.2 SEER2) are two-stage and are the former XR17 platform renamed XR16. American Standard equivalents: Silver 14 AC 4A7A4 (e.g. 4A7A4024N1000A) and Silver 14 heat pump 4A6H4 (e.g. 4A6H4048N1000A), both single-stage; 4A6H6 heat pump (older H-suffix Silver 16, single-stage); 4A7A6 AC stage count not confirmed. Also related: XR13 (4TTR3 / 4TWR3) single-stage. R-454B successors use a 5 prefix (5TTR4, 5TWR4, 5TTR6, 5A6H4, A5A6H6) and are not covered here. Search terms: 4TTR4, 4TTR6, 4TWR4, 4TWR6, XR14, XR16, Silver 14, Silver 16, 4A7A4, 4A6H4, 4A6H6.
These are Trane's mainstream split condensing units and heat pumps: a Climatuff (Trane) / Duration (American Standard) scroll compressor, an all-aluminum Spine Fin outdoor coil wrapped around the cabinet, a top-discharge fan and a 24 V non-communicating control. XR14 units are single-stage at up to 14.8 SEER2. The current XR16 is two-stage at up to 16.2 SEER2, while older XR16 units in the field are single-stage, so read the model suffix before planning a repair. Heat pump versions add a reversing valve and a defrost control board.
Safety first
- All sealed-system work (gauges for charge, recovery, brazing, leak repair, compressor or reversing valve replacement) is blocked: refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
- Lock out the disconnect and verify 0 V before opening the control box; capacitors hold a charge after power-off, so discharge them.
- Live-voltage measurements at 208/230 V require insulated probes and PPE.
- R-454B (5-prefix) successors use a mildly flammable A2L refrigerant: do not apply R-410A procedures or parts to them.
How it works
A Y call from the thermostat (or indoor board) energizes the contactor coil; the contactor sends 208/230 V to the compressor and outdoor fan motor, which start with the help of a run capacitor (often a dual capacitor). Single-stage units run at one capacity until the call ends.
Two-stage XR16 units (N suffix) take Y1 for low stage and Y2 for high stage; the compressor changes capacity internally, so the thermostat and indoor unit must be wired and set up for two stages.
Heat pumps (4TWR4, 4TWR6): the O signal positions the reversing valve for cooling. In heating the outdoor coil becomes the evaporator and frosts; the defrost control monitors coil temperature and time and periodically reverses the unit to defrost, stopping the outdoor fan and calling backup heat during the defrost.
The outdoor unit is factory charged. Charge is checked by subcooling or superheat per the unit nameplate, which is sealed-system work reserved for EPA 608-certified technicians.
