Lennox ML14XC1 / EL16XC1 single-stage condensers and ML14XP1 heat pumps: quick sheet
Covers: Lennox Merit ML14XC1 and Elite EL16XC1 single-stage R-410A split air conditioners, plus the matching ML14XP1 / EL16XP1 heat pumps. Search terms: ML14XC1-036-230A, ML14XC1S036, EL16XC1-048-230A, EL16XC1S, ML14XP1-036-230A, EL16XP1. Model string: 14/16 = efficiency class, X = R-410A, C = condenser (P = heat pump), 1 = single-stage; the three digits after the dash are nominal capacity in thousands of Btuh (018-060), 230 = 208/230 V single phase. Successor R-454B models use K in place of X (ML14KC1, EL16KC1, ML14KP1). Older Lennox 13ACX, 14ACX and XC13/XC14 condensers use the same contactor-and-capacitor layout, but their specs are not covered here.
These are conventional single-stage scroll condensers with no control board on the AC models: a 24 V contactor, a dual run capacitor, a PSC condenser fan motor and pressure switches in the safety circuit. Most no-cool calls are electrical (capacitor, contactor, fan motor, 24 V signal) or airflow (dirty coil). Anything involving refrigerant charge, leaks or the compressor sealed system is for an EPA 608-certified technician.
Safety first
- Refrigerant charging, recovery, leak repair, brazing, reading pressures for charge and compressor replacement are blocked: refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
- Pull the disconnect and verify 0 V before touching the control box; the capacitor can hold a charge, so discharge it first.
- Never bypass a pressure switch to keep the unit running.
- R-454B (K) successor units use a mildly flammable refrigerant: no open flame or brazing by us; refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
The thermostat sends 24 V on Y through the indoor unit to the contactor coil. The contactor closes and sends 208/230 V to the compressor (through the dual run capacitor's HERM side) and to the condenser fan motor (FAN side).
A high pressure switch (auto reset) and a low pressure / loss-of-charge switch are wired in series with the contactor coil on the EL16 family; if either opens, the contactor drops out. One parts listing for an EL16XC1 also shows a start capacitor and a crankcase heater on larger sizes (single source; check the unit's wiring diagram).
ML14XP1 / EL16XP1 heat pumps add a reversing valve and a defrost control board that runs timed or demand defrost. Read the defrost board LEDs and use the legend on the unit's wiring diagram; we have not confirmed a code table for these boards.
R-454B successor models (K in the name) pair with indoor units that have refrigerant detection; the furnace or air handler may run the blower and lock out the compressor if a leak is sensed.
