Speed Queen DR3 / DR5 / DR7 dryer: quick sheet

Covers: Speed Queen (Alliance Laundry Systems) residential 27 in DR-series dryers, electric (…E) and gas (…G): DR3, DR5 and DR7, with product codes such as DR3003WE, DR5004WE and DR7003WE/DR7003WG. The label carries a long model number too (e.g. ADE6HRYS178TW01 on the DR5004WE). DR3/DR5 have knob controls; DR7 has an electronic display. The DC5 'Classic' dryer is a different design.

Single sourceBrands: Speed Queen5 components

These are heavy-duty, galvanized-drum dryers sold as the partners to the TR washers. DR5 and DR7 add moisture sensing and steam; steam models need a cold-water hookup. Most calls are no heat or slow drying from exhaust restriction, a motor that cut out on overload, steam-hose leaks and sensor-bar buildup. Fault-code lists for the DR7 differ between repair sites, so confirm any code in the service documents before you order parts.

Safety first

  • Unplug before any panel removal; electric models are 240 V.
  • Gas models: no gas valve, burner, orifice or pressure work unless you are a licensed gas technician. If you smell gas, shut off the supply, ventilate, no sparks, and refer.
  • Never bypass a thermal fuse or high-limit to test a 'no heat' call.
  • Fix the airflow cause before replacing a thermal fuse, or it will open again.

How it works

Belt-driven drum with a 1/3 HP motor and a blower rated about 220 CFM on the DR5004WE. Electric models use an element rated about 5350 W; gas models use a gas valve and burner (inspection only, see safety).

Auto-Sensing cycles use moisture-sensing bars in the drum to end the cycle, set by the Auto-Dryness setting. Small loads (two towels) won't sense properly, so the guide recommends Time Dry for them.

The motor has an overload protector: if the dryer stops and won't restart, the guide says to wait about 10 minutes and try again before you suspect the motor.

Steam models feed water through an inlet hose to a steam valve at the rear; the guide calls for replacing that hose about every five years.

Venting matters: the installation guide limits the length of 4 in rigid metal duct, and the allowed length drops with each 90-degree elbow and with the type of outside hood.

Dryer vent cleaning service: disconnect, brush the run, check the hood and prove airflow

Failure to clean is the leading factor in dryer fires. Whirlpool says vents to the outside should be cleaned every one to two years, or sooner if drying slows, and fire services recommend cleaning the lint filter every load. The service is: disconnect, clean the dryer's exhaust outlet and transition, brush the run section by section to the hood, replace foil or plastic duct with rigid or semi-rigid metal, reconnect with foil tape (no screws) and test airflow at the hood.

Clothes come out of the dryer full of static

Static is mostly overdrying plus fabric mix. Synthetic fabrics hold charge, dry air makes it worse, and every minute of tumbling past dry builds more. Fix it with sensor or lower-heat cycles, sorting synthetics from cottons, and a softener product or dryer balls. If an Auto/Sensor cycle overdries every load, the moisture sensor bars may be coated or the sensor circuit faulty.

Dryer runs and runs: timer won't advance or the cycle never ends

On mechanical-timer dryers, the timer motor advances differently by cycle. On Timed Dry it runs the whole time. On Auto/Sensor Dry it usually advances only while the heat is cycled off, so a dryer that never gets hot enough (weak or no heat, open element half, gas valve coils weak) can run forever on Auto while timed cycles end normally. Test Timed Dry first: that splits a heat problem from a timer problem.
