Rinnai RE (non-condensing) and RX / RXP SENSEI (condensing) tankless: quick sheet

Covers: Rinnai RE series non-condensing tankless: RE140iN, RE160iN, RE180iN, RE199iN (indoor), RE140eN to RE199eN (outdoor), REP160iN / REP199eN (built-in pump). Rinnai SENSEI RX series condensing tankless: RX160iN, RX199iN, and RXP199iN (built-in pump). Suffix i = indoor, e = outdoor, N = natural gas (P = propane). Search terms: Rinnai RE199, RE160, RX199, RXP199, SENSEI RX, Rinnai tankless code, Rinnai LC code, Rinnai flush. Important: despite sitting next to the RX in the catalog, the RE line is NOT condensing (UEF about 0.81-0.82); the RX/RXP line is condensing (UEF 0.97-0.98). The older RU/RUR SENSEI and the V-series have their own sheets.

Two current Rinnai residential lines that techs often mix up. The RE is the smaller, lighter non-condensing unit (about 14 in wide, roughly 38-42 lb) that replaced the RL series; the RX is the SENSEI condensing unit (18.5 in wide, about 54-58 lb) with a 1/2 in condensate drain. The 'P' versions (REP, RXP) add a built-in recirculation pump. Both lines share Rinnai's two-digit diagnostic code system, so the code list, inlet filter, flushing and electrical checks are the same. All gas valve, burner, combustion fan replacement and vent work is blocked for this library: report the code and refer to a licensed gas technician.

Safety first

  • Gas valve, burner, igniter, flame rod, combustion fan replacement, gas pressure and venting are blocked: refer to a licensed gas technician. Gas odor: leave the building and call the gas utility from outside.
  • 120 V AC is present inside the cabinet: disconnect power before opening the cover or unplugging sensors.
  • Condensate (RX / RXP) is acidic: gloves and eye protection.
  • Raising the outlet temperature above 120 F increases scald risk; advise mixing valves where children or elderly users are present.
  • A tripped thermal fuse (code 14) means the unit overheated; do not bypass it.

How it works

A fixture opens and cold water passes the inlet filter and the water flow sensor. Once the flow passes the activation threshold, the board starts the combustion fan, proves airflow, lights the burner and modulates gas input (RX199iN: 15,000 to 199,000 BTU/h; RE199iN: 10,400 to 199,000 BTU/h) to hold the set outlet temperature. A water flow servo valve can throttle flow when the burner is at full fire so the outlet temperature does not drop.

On the RX/RXP, a secondary heat exchanger pulls extra heat out of the flue gas until it condenses. That acidic condensate collects in an internal trap and leaves through the 1/2 in NPT condensate connection, normally to a neutralizer and a drain. If the trap or drain backs up, the unit shows code 25 and stops. The RE has no secondary heat exchanger; it vents hotter flue gas through a non-condensing vent system listed in the RE manual.

Temperature is read by thermistors on the inlet, the outlet and the heat exchanger, and the board compares them with the set point. Factory maximum is 120 F on the RX; Rinnai literature lists 140 F as available through a parameter change (retailer and Rinnai spec data agree). Over-temperature, ground faults, airflow problems, scale and leaks are reported as two-digit codes on the controller, and 'LC' means scale build-up was detected and the heat exchanger needs a flush.

The pump versions (REP, RXP) carry an internal circulator for recirculation programs; a standard RX can be upgraded with Rinnai's internal pump kit (RX2RXPCK, listed by a retailer). Without a dedicated return line, a thermal bypass valve at the far fixture is needed. Wi-Fi control is through a separately sold Rinnai module; initial setup on the RX uses Bluetooth and the Rinnai app.

Rheem / Ruud / Richmond atmospheric gas tank with electronic thermopile control: quick sheet (diagnostic and electrical side)

Residential atmospheric-vent, standing-pilot gas tanks (Performance, Performance Plus, Professional Classic and the Ruud/Richmond equivalents, typically XG-prefix model numbers) built with the Guardian-style FVIR combustion chamber and a self-powered electronic gas control (White-Rodgers or Honeywell, depending on year). Power-vent and condensing Rheem tanks use different controls and are not covered here. Gas-side work (gas control, pilot, burner, thermopile replacement, venting) is diagnosis-and-refer only.

A.O. Smith ProLine / Signature and State atmospheric gas tanks: quick sheet (diagnostic and electrical side)

Residential atmospheric-vent, standing-pilot FVIR gas tanks: A.O. Smith ProLine (plumber channel, e.g. GCR and GCG families), A.O. Smith Signature (sold at Lowe's) and comparable State models, with a thermopile-powered electronic gas control and status LED (Honeywell-type control on most current units). Power-vent, direct-vent and condensing models are excluded.
