KitchenAid / Whirlpool 15-inch clear-ice undercounter ice makers (KUIX535H class): quick sheet

Covers: Whirlpool-built 15-in automatic clear-ice makers sold as KitchenAid (KUIX535HPS / HPA / HBS and earlier KUIS/KUID) and Whirlpool. Built-in or freestanding; gravity drain or pump. Confirm wiring and test values on the tech sheet behind the lower panel.

Cross-checkedBrands: KitchenAid, Whirlpool8 components

A slab-type clear-ice machine. Water is pumped over a refrigerated evaporator plate, the finished slab is released in harvest and drops onto a heated wire cutter grid that slices it into cubes. The bin is insulated but not refrigerated, so ice slowly melts and is replaced. Status light: green normal, yellow clean soon, red clean now.

Safety first

  • Unplug before removing the grid or lower panel.
  • Sealed-system work is blocked (EPA 608).
  • Do not use ammonia cleaners or dishwash plastic parts.

How it works

Fill: the inlet valve fills a water pan; a recirculating pump sends water over the cold evaporator plate. Minerals stay in the circulating water, which is why the ice is clear and why scale builds up. On this family the pump has a built-in water level sensing function, so a bad pump can cause fill and thickness problems even while it runs.

Harvest: when the slab reaches thickness, the system warms the plate so the slab slides off onto the cutter grid. The grid wires are heated by low voltage from a transformer and cut the slab in two directions. Unit levelness matters: an out-of-level unit lets the slab hang between plate and grid.

Bin: an ice level sensor (thermistor) on the right side of the compartment stops production when ice reaches it. The cutter grid harness plugs in on the left side. Both must be reconnected after every cleaning or the unit will not work properly.

Drain: melt water and purge water leave by gravity or through a drain pump. A dirty condenser behind the lower panel raises operating temperatures and cuts ice output.
