GE electronic freezer ice maker (feeler-arm / paddle style): field service manual

Covers: GE's electronic crescent-cube ice maker used in GE freezers (side-by-side, top-mount and bottom-mount), with a feeler arm or paddle, an electronic control and thermistor, and on many versions an On/Off switch with a green LED. Covers the common replacement kit family that superseded older mechanical GE ice makers.

Cross-checkedBrands: GE, GE Profile, Hotpoint6 components

GE's ice maker has its own small control board and thermistor, so it diagnoses itself. A flashing green light on the switch means it has logged a fault. It also has a built-in service mode you start with the feeler arm, so no jumpers or test points are needed. GE says the ice maker body has to reach about 15-16°F before it will start a cycle, so a warm freezer is the first thing to rule out.

Safety first

  • Unplug the unit before removing the ice maker.
  • The mold and heater get hot during harvest.
  • Keep fingers clear of the rake during the service harvest.

How it works

Freeze: after a fill, the control waits for the mold thermistor to reach its harvest temperature. GE's support pages give 15-16°F at the ice maker as the minimum for production and recommend a 0°F freezer setting.

Harvest: the control turns on the mold heater and the motor. The rake turns one full revolution back to its home position, where its teeth line up with the stripper. During the turn the feeler arm checks the bin level. Then the water valve opens for a short timed fill: GE gives about 4-7 seconds, and one service write-up gives 5.1 seconds for the service-mode fill.

Fault logic (models with an LED switch): if a harvest takes more than 7 minutes the control tries a Harvest Fix routine. If harvest still isn't done after 30 minutes it enters a fault state and the green light flashes. GE lists a jammed cube, a dead heater or a motor that won't run or won't stop as causes, and says a fault often means the ice maker needs replacing.

Power-up: one service write-up says that if the thermistor reads 50°F or warmer at power-up, the control runs a brief self-test that pulses the motor, heater and valve. That can make one small cube on a new install, which is normal.
