Covers: KitchenAid 24-inch hidden top-control KDPM804K** with a pocket handle: KDPM804KPS (stainless with PrintShield) and KDPM804KBS (black stainless with PrintShield). The KDTM804K** is the bar-handle sibling. Sold approx. 2019-2023 (inferred from listings; retailers now list it as no longer available). Assembled in Findlay, Ohio (Abt listing). Find the model/serial tag on the tub edge inside the door. Build-date reading from the serial is not stated here (not confirmed by two sources for this family); see the guide find-model-and-serial-number-on-any-appliance.

Upper-line KitchenAid built-in: 16 place settings, 44 dBA, FreeFlex third rack with its own wash jets, five spray arms and a heater plus fan drying system (ProDry). It is a Whirlpool-family dishwasher, so faults follow the Whirlpool F#E# logic; deeper diagnostics are in the Whirlpool/KitchenAid/Maytag dishwasher field service manual. It sits above the KDPM604K (separate quick sheet).

Safety first

  • Switch off the circuit (or unplug) and close the water supply before removing the kick plate or pulling the unit.
  • Hardwired units: open the junction box only with the breaker off and verified dead.
  • Water in the sump may be hot right after a cycle; the heating element stays hot for a while.
  • Live-voltage checks at the valve, pump, heater or board are caution work.
  • Watch for broken glass in the filter and sump.
  • Flood risk: keep towels down and confirm no leaks after reconnecting.

How it works

Tub and racks: tall stainless tub with three racks. The FreeFlex third rack at the top has rotating jets fed from the water supply tube at the back; the middle rack is height-adjustable on SatinGlide rails.

Pump and wash: the inlet valve fills the sump, the wash motor drives water to the spray arms (Abt lists five wash arms and seven wash levels in total). A soil sensor lets the sensing cycles change time and water; ProWash and Express Wash are among the five cycles, with Hi Temp, Sani Rinse and Top 2 Racks as options.

Filtration: KitchenAid calls it the Advanced Clean Water Wash System with microfiltration. Expect a manual-clean filter in the tub floor: a dirty filter is the first suspect for gritty dishes and slow drain.

Drying: Fan-Enabled ProDry uses a heating element plus a fan to move hot moist air out; Extended ProDry adds time. Plastics may still come out damp.

Controls: hidden top controls on the door edge with a door-front indicator light that changes color to show progress. Faults appear as F#E# on the console or as two groups of light flashes (count the first group for F, the second for E).

Whirlpool family dishwashers: reading Clean-light flash codes, F#E# displays and the diagnostic cycle

Models with a display show the code as F#E#. Lights-only models blink one LED in two groups: the first group is the F (function) number, a short pause, then the E (error) number, then a long pause before it repeats. A diagnostic cycle on many of these controls is entered by pressing any three keys in a 1-2-3 order three times quickly, which lights all indicators and lets you run the cycle to watch each function.

GE appliances: reading and recalling fault codes on dishwashers and laundry

GE dishwashers with electronic controls show codes on the display (C1, H2O, PF and similar) or flash the Start/Reset light in counted groups on LED-only models. GE itself splits codes into ones the user can clear (delay, detergent cup, power failure, kinked hose) and ones that need service. GE laundry generations differ a lot: older top-loaders flash LEDs, front-loaders keep a stored-code list inside a test mode. Entry sequences vary between GE models and the sources disagree, so take them only from the model's tech sheet.

Frigidaire / Electrolux: diagnostic mode, last-fault recall and relay-test codes that are not faults

Newer Frigidaire/Electrolux dishwashers show i-codes (i10, i20, i50 and similar) and two-letter codes; during the relay test inside diagnostic mode they also show short codes that only confirm the test is running and are not faults. Front-load washers keep a last-code readout you reach with a button pair or knob position. Refrigerators lose the fault code when the plug is pulled. Entry sequences differ by model and the sources conflict, so get them from the service data sheet on the unit.
