Bosch 800 Series SHP78CM CrystalDry dishwasher (2023 platform): quick sheet

Covers: Bosch 800 Series 24-inch top-control SHP78CM** family (for example SHP78CM5N, stainless anti-fingerprint, pocket handle). ENERGY STAR lists SHP78CM** on the market from June 2023 (certified December 2022). This is the newer platform; for the older SHPM88Z75N see its own quick sheet.

Cross-checkedBrands: Bosch9 components

Bosch's 2023 800 Series built-in: CrystalDry (Bosch's mineral/zeolite drying), PrecisionWash with a PowerControl lower spray arm, a flexible third rack, RackMatic middle rack, Wi-Fi Home Connect, AquaStop leak protection and 42 dBA. Fault codes follow Bosch E-code logic (E15 water in base, E24 drain path, E25 drain pump). Deep diagnostics: see the Bosch dishwasher field service manual.

Safety first

  • Switch off the breaker and close the water before removing the toe kick or pulling the unit.
  • Hardwired junction box work only with the circuit verified dead.
  • Water in the sump may be hot after a cycle.
  • Live tests at the board, pump or valve are caution work.
  • Watch for glass in the pump.
  • Flood risk: check the AquaStop hose and connections for leaks after reinstalling.

How it works

Water enters through the AquaStop inlet hose and is measured into the sump. The wash motor (Bosch names the drive SilentPowerDrive) circulates it through the spray arms; PrecisionWash uses sensors to follow how the load is cleaning, and the PowerControl lower arm targets the dishes. The Aquasensor (a turbidity sensor) lets Auto and Normal adjust water and temperature to the soil.

Bosch dishwashers of this era heat water in the wash circuit rather than with an exposed element in the tub floor, so there is no glowing coil to inspect. Heater faults show as E-codes, not as a visible burned element.

CrystalDry uses a zeolite mineral reservoir: at drying time moisture is absorbed by the mineral and released as heat (Bosch quotes up to 176 F), drying plastics better than condensation-only drying. ENERGY STAR lists the method as mineral dry. PureDry is the base drying mode.

AquaStop protects against floods: a floor sensor in the base pan detects water and the drain pump runs while fill stops (Bosch code E15). Five cycles are on the console (Heavy, Auto, Normal, Speed 60, Favorite); extra programs such as Machine Care, Half Load and Rinse are available through the Home Connect app.

Whirlpool family dishwashers: reading Clean-light flash codes, F#E# displays and the diagnostic cycle

Models with a display show the code as F#E#. Lights-only models blink one LED in two groups: the first group is the F (function) number, a short pause, then the E (error) number, then a long pause before it repeats. A diagnostic cycle on many of these controls is entered by pressing any three keys in a 1-2-3 order three times quickly, which lights all indicators and lets you run the cycle to watch each function.

GE appliances: reading and recalling fault codes on dishwashers and laundry

GE dishwashers with electronic controls show codes on the display (C1, H2O, PF and similar) or flash the Start/Reset light in counted groups on LED-only models. GE itself splits codes into ones the user can clear (delay, detergent cup, power failure, kinked hose) and ones that need service. GE laundry generations differ a lot: older top-loaders flash LEDs, front-loaders keep a stored-code list inside a test mode. Entry sequences vary between GE models and the sources disagree, so take them only from the model's tech sheet.

Frigidaire / Electrolux: diagnostic mode, last-fault recall and relay-test codes that are not faults

Newer Frigidaire/Electrolux dishwashers show i-codes (i10, i20, i50 and similar) and two-letter codes; during the relay test inside diagnostic mode they also show short codes that only confirm the test is running and are not faults. Front-load washers keep a last-code readout you reach with a button pair or knob position. Refrigerators lose the fault code when the plug is pulled. Entry sequences differ by model and the sources conflict, so get them from the service data sheet on the unit.
