GE Triton / Triton XL and PDW / EDW dishwashers (2000s): quick sheet

Covers: GE built-in dishwashers sold as Triton and Triton XL (GSD prefixes such as GSD55, GSD59, GSD62, GSD66), GE Profile PDW and GE Eterna EDW models of the 2000s, plus the same-era GLD/GHD/Hotpoint HLD units. GE's timeline puts the first Triton in 1999; some 2009 GSD5 models still carried the Triton label. Includes the 2012 CPSC heating-element recall (models sold March 2006 to August 2009).

Single sourceBrands: GE, Hotpoint5 components

GE's 2000s front- and top-control dishwashers: a TriClean-style system with three wash arms, filtration with dual pumps and a Piranha hard-food disposer on Triton models. Before any repair, check the recall: CPSC recall 12-244 (August 2012) covers about 1.3 million GE, Adora, Eterna, Profile and Hotpoint dishwashers whose heating element can fail electrically and start a fire. Then the usual calls: will not start (door latch), not draining, blinking lights, and poor drying.

Safety first

  • Breaker off before the kick plate, heater or pumps.
  • Never run a recalled unit that has not been repaired.
  • Water off before the inlet valve.

How it works

Recall check first: model prefixes GLC4, GLD4, GLD5, GLD6, GSD61, GSD62, GSD63, GSD66, GSD67, GSD69, GLDL, PDW7, PDWF7, EDW4, EDW5, EDW6, GHD4, GHD5, GHD6, GHDA4, GHDA6 and Hotpoint HLD4, with the serial starting with one of the listed two-letter date codes (FL through GR). The label is on the left tub wall. The remedy was a free repair; tell the owner to stop using it and contact GE if it was never done.

Triton wash system per GE: three wash arms, triple filtration with dual pumps, and a Piranha anti-jam hard-food disposer.

GE lights and beeps: a beep every 30-60 seconds means the door was opened mid-cycle; a blinking Start/Reset light usually means it is resetting and draining (75-90 seconds). GE's reset: press Start/Reset and wait 2 minutes; if it persists, breaker off 30 seconds.

Door latch: the latch must fully engage its switch or the unit will not start even though the panel lights.

Service/test mode key sequences vary by model and sources disagree, so use the tech sheet behind the kick plate.

Whirlpool family dishwashers: reading Clean-light flash codes, F#E# displays and the diagnostic cycle

Models with a display show the code as F#E#. Lights-only models blink one LED in two groups: the first group is the F (function) number, a short pause, then the E (error) number, then a long pause before it repeats. A diagnostic cycle on many of these controls is entered by pressing any three keys in a 1-2-3 order three times quickly, which lights all indicators and lets you run the cycle to watch each function.

GE appliances: reading and recalling fault codes on dishwashers and laundry

GE dishwashers with electronic controls show codes on the display (C1, H2O, PF and similar) or flash the Start/Reset light in counted groups on LED-only models. GE itself splits codes into ones the user can clear (delay, detergent cup, power failure, kinked hose) and ones that need service. GE laundry generations differ a lot: older top-loaders flash LEDs, front-loaders keep a stored-code list inside a test mode. Entry sequences vary between GE models and the sources disagree, so take them only from the model's tech sheet.

Frigidaire / Electrolux: diagnostic mode, last-fault recall and relay-test codes that are not faults

Newer Frigidaire/Electrolux dishwashers show i-codes (i10, i20, i50 and similar) and two-letter codes; during the relay test inside diagnostic mode they also show short codes that only confirm the test is running and are not faults. Front-load washers keep a last-code readout you reach with a button pair or knob position. Refrigerators lose the fault code when the plug is pulled. Entry sequences differ by model and the sources conflict, so get them from the service data sheet on the unit.
