GE GFD55 front-load dryer (GFD55ESSNWW electric / GFD55GSSNWW gas): quick sheet

A 7.8 cu ft stackable front-load dryer with Wi-Fi (SmartHQ), Sanitize, Sensor Dry with two thermistors and a vent-restriction warning. The electric and gas versions share the cabinet, drum and control; only the heat source differs. Most calls are no heat, long dry times from a restricted vent, and drum noise.
Safety first
- Unplug before opening panels; a 240 V dryer can hurt badly on either leg.
- Live relay checks are trained-tech work: insulated probes, one hand, no jewelry.
- Gas model: never work on the gas valve, gas line or burner pressure. If you smell gas, ventilate, shut off gas, no switches or flames, and refer to a licensed gas technician.
- Never bypass a thermal fuse or limit to get heat.
How it works
The drive motor turns the drum by belt and spins the blower that pulls air through the heat source, the drum, the lint filter and out the exhaust.
Sensor Dry: retailer data says the control uses dual thermistors (one on the air inlet side, one on the outlet/blower side) to judge dryness and regulate heat. A repair forum case on this model confirms an outlet thermistor and main-board heater relays.
Heat on the electric version is switched by relays on the main board; a technician on a GFD55 'runs but no heat' case traced the fault to a relay that had power in but nothing out, and a new main board fixed it.
The vent sensor feature warns when exhaust airflow is restricted; a restricted vent is also the usual reason safety devices open.
