Friedrich Vert-I-Pak A-Series VHA vertical packaged heat pumps (closet units, R-410A): quick sheet with error codes
Covers: Friedrich Vert-I-Pak (VPAK) A-Series vertical packaged terminal heat pumps installed in a closet against an exterior wall with a VPAWP wall plenum and louver: VHA09K, VHA09R, VHA12K, VHA12R, VHA18K, VHA18R, VHA24K, VHA24R. VHA = Vert-I-Pak heat pump A-series; 09-24 = nominal cooling in thousands of BTU/h; K = 208-230 V, R = 265 V. Heater sizes 2.5 / 3.4 / 5.0 kW (plus 7.5 kW on 18 and 7.5 / 10.0 kW on 24). Optional fresh-air module (single F or dual D option). Search terms: VHA09K, VHA12K, VHA18K, VHA24K, Friedrich VPAK error code, VPAWP wall plenum.
A vertical PTAC: chassis and coils in a closet, outdoor air through a wall plenum, ducted supply, and a 24 V wall thermostat. The control logs numbered error codes with a history count and shows a wrench icon when maintenance is due. Many codes are logged while the unit keeps running on a default value, so the code tells you where to look even when the unit still works.
Safety first
- Lock out power before pulling the chassis; 265 V units are hard-wired.
- R-410A refrigerant work is blocked: EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
Control display: four digits; the left two show the error code (1-24) with On/Off icons for the current state, the right two show the history count (up to 99).
Sensor faults fall back to defaults: indoor sensor 75 °F (cool) / 68 °F (heat); indoor coil 40 °F; outdoor coil 20 °F (and electric heat in heating if available).
Heat pump defrost: active defrost for at least 6 minutes when heat-pump run time exceeds 60 minutes and the outdoor coil is 26 °F or less (code 23 logs it).
Room freeze protection (code 10) runs high fan and electric heat until the room reaches 46 °F; the display shows FRZ.
