Friedrich FreshAire PVE / PVH DC-inverter PTACs with make-up air (R-32): quick sheet
Covers: Friedrich FreshAire packaged terminal units, PV series with a DC inverter rotary compressor and built-in fresh (make-up) air, R-32. Model pattern from the IOM: PV (Friedrich digital PTAC, FreshAire platform) + E (cooling with electric heat) or H (heat pump with auxiliary heat) + nominal capacity (09 = 9,000, 12 = 12,000 BTU/h in the current range; the IOM's legend also lists 07 and 15) + voltage (K = 230/208 V, R = 265 V) + heater digit + F (FreshAire chassis) + design series, e.g. PVH09K3FC, PVH12K3FC, PVH09R..., PVH12R.... Friedrich says the range is two models at 230/208 V and two at 265 V covering about 5,800 to 15,500 BTU/h. Search terms: PVH12K3FC, PVH09K3FC, Friedrich FreshAire PTAC, PXPCFA23020.
Unlike a fixed-speed PTAC, the FreshAire runs an inverter compressor with an IPM board, so its code list includes inverter faults (compressor start, IPM over-current, IPM overheat, DC bus voltage). Heater size is chosen by the cord kit (default 3.5 kW; 1.5, 2.5 and 5.0 kW optional), and a DIP switch block sets functions. A red 3-position DIP switch SW2 tells the board the unit capacity and must never be changed except to match a replacement board to the chassis.
Safety first
- Never change SW2 except to match the chassis on a replacement board (Friedrich warning).
- Inverter DC bus holds a charge after power-off.
- R-32 refrigerant work is blocked: EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
Power cord kits (PXPCFA series) set the heater: e.g. PXPCFA23020 for 3.5 kW at 230/208 V on a 20 A 6-20R; PXPCFA23030 for 5.0 kW on 30 A 6-30R; 265 V kits PXPCFA26515/26520/26530 on 7-15R/7-20R/7-30R. The IOM flags a 'power cord error' if a 30 A cord is used on a 9K unit.
SW1 DIP functions (per the wiring diagram): heat pump, electric heater, humidity-controlled fresh air, freeze protection, auto restart; SW3 sets fresh-air enable and continuous vs cycling fresh air.
Room freeze protection: below 50 °F room temperature the unit runs high fan and strip heat up to 55 °F, in any mode, and can be disabled.
Indoor coil frost sensor protects the compressor when airflow is low or outdoor temperature makes the coil freeze.
