Danby DDR dehumidifiers (incl. recalled Gree-built and New Widetech-built units): quick sheet
Covers: Danby portable dehumidifiers with the DDR model prefix (Danby, Danby Premiere, Danby Designer, plus the Danby-made Generations GDR and ArcticAire ADR lines). Two recall groups matter on every call: the Gree-built units recalled in 2013 (DDR3011, DDR30P, DDR4511, DDR45P, DDR6511, DDR65CHP, all date codes, sold January 2005 - August 2013) and the New Widetech-built units recalled in 2021 (made before September 1, 2017, sold February 2009 - August 2017, e.g. DDR45A3GDB, DDR70A3GDB, DDR60RGDD, DDR25E, DDR30E, DDR45E, DDR5009REE, DDR6009REE, DDR7009REE, DDR50A1GP, DDR60A2GP, DDR70A1GP, GDR5011BL). Current models (e.g. DDR020BJWDB through DDR050BJWDB, DDR060BECWDB) are later builds.
Before any repair, read the nameplate on the back and check it against both recall lists. A recalled unit is not repaired: the owner stops using it, unplugs it and claims the refund. Non-recalled units are simple refrigerant-circuit dehumidifiers with an electronic control, humidity and coil sensors, a bucket switch and a fan; calls are mostly full-bucket codes, iced coils in cold basements, sensor codes, and clogged filters.
Safety first
- Check every DDR unit against both recall lists before working on it; recalled units can overheat and catch fire.
- Unplug before opening the cabinet or touching the sensors or fan.
- Sealed refrigerant circuit work is blocked: refer to an EPA 608-certified technician; replacement is usually the sensible advice on a portable unit.
How it works
A small compressor runs a sealed refrigerant loop; room air is pulled by the fan across the cold coil (water condenses into the bucket or hose) and then across the warm coil. Sealed-system work is referral only; newer units may use flammable refrigerant, so read the rating plate.
The control reads a humidity sensor and a coil/temperature sensor. Danby manuals show AS = humidity sensor error, ES = temperature sensor error, P2 = bucket full or not seated; some models add E3 and EC codes whose meanings vary by model (one contractor manual lists E3 as a control panel error).
Defrost is automatic: when the coil frosts the compressor stops while the fan keeps running. Danby's published operating floor is about 41 F (5 C); below that, frost and poor collection are expected, and running fan-only until the frost melts is the manual's advice. On some older models P1 indicates defrost rather than a fault.
After a power cycle or code reset, the compressor can wait up to about 3 minutes before starting (protection delay), which is not a fault.
