Daikin DX16SA / DZ16SA and DX14SA / DZ14SA single-stage condensers and heat pumps: quick sheet
Covers: Daikin-branded residential split outdoor units built in the Goodman (Daikin Comfort Technologies) plants: DX16SA and DX14SA air conditioners, DZ16SA and DZ14SA heat pumps. Prefix DX = air conditioner, DZ = heat pump; the two digits are the SEER class; S = single stage; the next letter is the design series. The digits after that give nominal capacity in kBtu/h followed by a voltage digit (1 = 208/230 V single phase), then revision letters: e.g. DX16SA0241A, DX16SA0371A, DZ16SA0421BB, DX14SA0361. (Pattern inferred from model numbers seen in listings; confirm tonnage on the data plate.) Also seen: DX13SA (13 SEER, discontinued under the AIM Act R-410A phase-down). Not covered: DX16TC/DX18TC two-stage, DX17VC/DX20VC/DZ20VC inverter models (Daikin compressors, ComfortNet communicating). Electrical and defrost details are the same type as Goodman GSX16/GSZ16: see the Goodman GSX/GSZ quick sheet for contactor, capacitor, fan motor and defrost board tests.
Daikin bought Goodman in 2012, and the single-stage DX/DZ 14 and 16 lines are Daikin-badged units from the Goodman platform: scroll compressor, PSC condenser fan motor, dual run capacitor, contactor, and (on DZ heat pumps) a time/temperature defrost board with reversing valve. What differs from Goodman is mainly the badge, the model naming and the warranty: Daikin markets a 12-year parts and 6-year unit replacement limited warranty on these models, conditional on online registration within 60 days. Daikin product registration runs through Goodman's warranty site, which is a quick way to confirm the family.
Safety first
- Disconnect and verify 0 V before touching the control box; discharge capacitors.
- All refrigerant work (charge, recovery, brazing, leak repair, compressor or reversing valve replacement) is blocked: refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
- Do not use the defrost test pins on a unit you have not identified on the wiring diagram; wrong pins can damage the board.
How it works
Cooling (DX and DZ): the thermostat Y call energizes the 24 VAC contactor coil; the contactor sends 208/230 VAC to the compressor and fan. The DX16SA uses a single-speed PSC condenser fan motor and a single-stage scroll compressor, so capacity is fixed.
Heating (DZ only): the reversing valve shifts the refrigerant flow so the outdoor coil becomes the evaporator. The O terminal energizes the reversing valve in cooling on Goodman-platform heat pumps (confirm on the unit wiring diagram).
Defrost (DZ only): the defrost board counts compressor run time with the coil cold (sensed by the defrost thermostat or sensor on the outdoor coil). After the selected interval it shifts the valve to cooling, stops the outdoor fan and calls for indoor auxiliary heat until the coil warms or a time limit is reached.
Warranty logic: if the unit is not registered online within 60 days of installation, only the initial (shorter) warranty term applies, except in states/provinces where registration cannot be required (California and Quebec are named in Daikin's warranty table).
