Chamberlain RJO20 / RJO70 / RJO101 wall-mount (jackshaft) openers: quick sheet
Covers: Chamberlain wall-mount jackshaft openers RJO20 (also RJO20C, RJO20MC; discontinued), RJO70 (discontinued) and RJO101. The RJO20 shares its diagnostic chart with the LiftMaster 3800 and plain 8500 (non-Wi-Fi). Search terms: Chamberlain RJO20 blinking learn light, RJO70 won't close, RJO101 cable tension monitor, Chamberlain wall mount opener flashing.
DC-motor openers that mount on the wall beside the torsion tube and turn it directly, so there is no rail or trolley. They need a sectional door with a torsion spring assembly and add a cable tension monitor and an automatic deadbolt-style lock. The RJO20 has no battery backup; the RJO70 adds battery backup and a 1,500-lumen myQ remote LED light. Diagnostic display differs by generation, so always read the model label first.
Safety first
- Torsion springs, cable drums, lift cables and winding the torsion tube are blocked: refer to a trained door systems technician. Never loosen the operator collar or set screws on a tube under spring tension.
- If a spring is broken, do not pull the manual release with the door open: the door can drop. Close it first if possible and keep people clear.
- Unplug the operator (and the RJO70 battery) before opening the housing.
- After any adjustment, the door must reverse on a 1-1/2 in. object on the floor.
How it works
The operator's output collar slides onto the end of the 1 in. torsion tube and turns it, which winds the lift cables onto the drums. The springs still carry the door weight; the opener only moves a balanced door. A heavy or unbalanced door shows up as force and travel faults.
A cable tension monitor near a drum watches for slack lift cable. Chamberlain manuals for these models state the door will not close unless the safety reversing sensors and the cable tension monitor are connected and working.
The automatic lock throws a bolt into the door track when the door closes. myQ (built-in gateway on the RJO20, Wi-Fi on RJO70/RJO101) allows phone control; remote closing features rely on the opener's warning light and sensors.
On the RJO20 the diagnostic LED next to the Learn button flashes a count, pauses and repeats. Count the flashes and match them to the RJO chart. Openers or replacement logic boards built after February 3, 2022 no longer report codes 1, 2 and 4 (Chamberlain). For RJO70/RJO101 use the chart that matches the model label.
