Control-valve water softeners (Fleck, Clack, big-box units): field service manual

Covers: Single-tank ion-exchange softeners with an electronic control valve (Fleck 5600/7000, Clack WS1, Whirlpool/GE/Morton cabinet units). Kinetico twin-tank units are non-electric (water-meter driven) and Culligan units are usually dealer-serviced.

Cross-checkedBrands: Fleck (Pentair), Clack, Whirlpool, GE, Morton, Culligan, Kinetico7 components

A resin tank holds ion-exchange resin that swaps hardness minerals for sodium (or potassium). A brine tank holds salt and water. The control valve on top of the resin tank runs a timed regeneration that flushes the resin and recharges it with brine. Almost every fault is either in the brine tank, the valve drive, or the piston/seal stack.

Safety first

  • Always bypass and depressurize before opening the valve
  • Low-voltage drive, but the transformer plugs into 120 V: unplug before service
  • Use only potable-water-rated lubricants

How it works

Service: water flows down through the resin and leaves soft through the riser (distributor) tube.

Backwash: flow is reversed up through the resin to lift and loosen the bed and flush debris to drain.

Brine draw and slow rinse: the injector (venturi) pulls brine from the salt tank through the resin, then a slow rinse pushes the brine through and out.

Rapid rinse: a fast downflow rinse packs the bed and clears remaining brine.

Brine refill: the valve puts a measured amount of water back into the salt tank to make brine for the next cycle (some valves refill before regeneration).

Triggering: metered (demand) valves count gallons and regenerate when capacity is used; timer valves regenerate on a fixed day schedule; a day override forces a regeneration after a set number of days.
