Batch-feed garbage disposal: field service manual

Covers: Residential batch-feed units activated by the sink stopper/cover

Cross-checkedBrands: InSinkErator, Waste King, Moen4 components

Batch-feed disposals run only when the special stopper/cover is placed in the sink opening, so the chamber is closed while grinding. There is no wall switch: the outlet under the sink stays live, and a switch inside the unit (mechanical or magnetic) is closed by the stopper. Mounting, plumbing and jam service are the same as continuous-feed.

Safety first

  • Unplug before any work; the outlet is always live
  • Never put hands in the chamber

How it works

Waste is loaded first; inserting and turning or pressing the cover closes an internal switch and starts the motor.

Removing the cover stops the unit.

Some designs use a mechanical (cherry-type) switch in the housing wall; others use magnets in the cover aligned with the unit.

Slots in the cover let water flow in while grinding.
