Tearing and leaking are usually about the bag and what goes in: generic or wrong-size bags, a bag not hooked on all retainers or not pressed into the corners, glass or sharp debris left in the bin, overfilling, or liquids. Check the retainers and the bin floor for damage or broken glass, then fix the habits. Ram or drawer faults are covered in other compactor guides.

A compactor start circuit is a chain of switches in series. Prove the outlet first, then continuity-test each switch with the power off: on-off / key switch, momentary start, drawer safety, tilt and top-limit / directional. If every switch passes, the motor's centrifugal switch, the motor or the wiring is next.
