Safely disconnecting and moving an appliance (electric, water; gas is blocked)
Most damage on a service call happens while moving the unit: torn water lines, crushed cords, scratched floors, tipped ranges and front-loaders with unlocked tubs. Disconnect in the right order, protect the floor and the unit, and never disturb a gas connection yourself.
Before you start
- Gas appliances: do not disconnect, reconnect or move against a gas connector. If the unit must move, turn the appliance off and have a licensed gas technician or plumber disconnect and reconnect it. If you smell gas, leave and call the gas utility from outside
- Lift with a helper and a dolly; strap the unit; keep it upright unless the manufacturer says otherwise
- Re-engage the anti-tip bracket after a range is pushed back
