Replace the oven bake element (electric range or wall oven)

Exposed bake elements are held by two screws at the back wall and come out from inside the oven; hidden elements sit under the oven floor and are reached by removing the floor panel (or from the rear on some models). Kill both breaker legs, pull the element forward, move the wires without letting them drop into the wall, and test that it glows and holds temperature.

Before you start

  • Turn off both breaker legs feeding the range (or unplug a freestanding range) and verify 0 V before touching the element terminals.
  • Let the oven cool fully.
  • Pull spade connectors by the metal terminal, not the wire, and do not let the wires fall back through the rear wall.
