Using a non-contact voltage tester correctly (and why it cannot prove a circuit is dead)

A non-contact voltage tester (NCVT) is a useful first screen, but it can miss voltage through shielding, metal conduit, wet insulation or DC circuits. Use it to find live wires quickly; use a contact meter with the live-dead-live method to prove a circuit is de-energized.

Before you start

  • No indication from an NCVT does not mean the circuit is dead
  • Contact testing at live points is a caution step: CAT-rated meter, insulated probes, PPE as your employer requires
